1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #465 – June 24, 2011, 04:19:33 PM Yeah, that was the plan. Run it at low boost for a year, then new heads and a good converter next year.I just hate doing the heads twice. The bloody gaskets are a century note.I have an old ATV and a snowblower here that I got ready to sell. If I can get a decent buck for them I may do the head upgrade now. The parts bill from Summit will be $1750.00 plus tax.In the mean time I'll start dis-assembling the engine. Quote Selected
Here we go (again) Reply #466 – July 11, 2011, 05:16:27 PM Had some time to rip apart the top of the engine.I found 3 things so far that have to be fixed. 1. The intake is leaking (there's a carbon trail visible from underneath). This is coming from an inadequate seal on the EGR passage where the intake meets the handmade tube. I will epoxy the hole shut on the upper intake and it should be OK.2. All 8 cylinders were leaking exhaust at the header. This due to the gasket not sealing on the flipped headers at the head. The gasket crossed the port above the header and wasn't sealing. I think bolting them up without the copper gasket will fix it.3. The oil drain for the turbo shows signs of getting too hot where it comes near the header outlet. I intend to make a solid line to go around the header, and cover it in a heat shield. That should do the trick with any luck.I'm not sure of where the water was leaving from, which is a bit worrisome. It would have been nice to see a definite 'smoking gun'.I am not going to send off the heads, just bolt it all back up with new gaskets. All the surfaces are cleaned up and I am hoping to have it back together soon. I have seriously considered just sping the turbo for now and getting it running N/A. All it would take is a set of headers and some pipe for the exhaust. In the end I decided to press on and hope to beat the gremlins down one at a time until I get it right. Quote Selected

Started to get the engine back together. Heads are back on and torqued down. I want to address fabbing new power steering hose and re-bending the trans cooler lines at this point in time before it gets too crowded in the bay again.I am a bit leery of the union I used on the PS line. It isn't really up to the pressure and I think it will fail eventually. I have a new Tbird hose that I can have a shop crimp my Explorer hose end on to make a neat, correct hose. One of the the trans lines is leaking at the tranny, so now is a good time to fix it and make both hoses route better up front. 1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #471 – July 24, 2011, 09:28:45 AM Here's a little detail about the changes I'm making, and why.The burnt turbo drain line fix and pics of the leaking header gaskets.I didn't get pictures of the intake EGR port leak, but I hopefully fixed it with a new gasket and some high temp sealant. Here's the drain hose, trying to show the discolored and damaged outer braid after just a few minutes run time. I decided to run steel pipe past this area and shorten the flex section. Quote Selected

All I've ever heard about the stuff is that it's header gasket magic.Yeah, Steve. I used it on the intake leak and will use it on the headers without a gasket. Just smear on the sealant and bolt it up.The ridge on the gasket was crossing through the port instead of surrounding it, so it was keeping the header from sealing. I think it'll be fine even without the RTV, but I'm going to use some anyway. Quote Selected
Continuing to fix issues Reply #476 – July 29, 2011, 01:05:49 PM I finished up the v2.0 transmission lines using -6 braided line and fittings connected to hard lines that run past the exhaust down-pipe.I used compression fittings on the hard lines, a hose nipple on the radiator in line, and a 90 on the cooler out line.Hope it is leak-free now!
