Bright Red; C, MR

1987 Turbo Coupe (There was also a Bright Red Mach 1 Special Edition color. Known interiors are SR, RC. The Mach 1 Silver was never produced or may be the Silver Blue color)

.

The bright red Mach 1 Special is a '88 model(everyone I've seen were built in May or June '88)... Exterior paint code 21...

I believe the Silver was supposed to be the Pewter color used on the '89s, Nope never seen one...

See Sig....

The Code 33 Silver Blue is oft rumoured as the Mach 1 Silver. I've heard of at least 2 with Mach 1 stickers in different parts of the country. I should have thrown that blurb on the 88 though as your right, all the Red ones were 88's.

I cant scan the document in my owners manual right now so, here goes:

*Thunderbird Mach 1 Turbo Coupe
*Description of special paint colors

1990 Titanium Frost

"This is a promising new execution of a type of paint which is expected to become highly popular and widely available within the auto industry within the next 2-3 years. It represents a reliable, mass production interpretation of the expensive flip-flop pearl paints used on custom show cars over the last decade. In normal light it appears to be about halfway between Driftwood clearcoat (6B) and silver clearcoat metallic (92). From different angles, however it appears to be a true silver metallic, while from yet additional angles it can appear to be a pale gold metallic or a silver with the slightest hint of red. Rest assured, the affect is very subtle, and in good taste, and should be an excellent compliment to Turbo Coupe's rounded aero styling."

1989 Vermillion Red

" A much brighter red than has recently been available...similar to, but with more red (less orange) than the Probe signal red (C2).
The current generation ( 1987/1988) Turbo Coupe was never painted in any type of non-metalic red until now. This color will be available in 1989 on Thunderbird, Mustang, and Escort. People who have seen 1989 prototypes finished in this color report that it is an outstanding paint color."

*Paint samples not available
"Due to program timing, and the difficulty of obtaining samples in Field Manager count for the twelve partiting Districts, we will not attempt to provide you with paint samples. Please use the above descriptions with partiting dealers."

My '91 T-Bird was titanium frost, and it was probably the worst of all Ford's colours for the clearcoat peeling epidemic. Every horizontal surface on that car lost its paint, and this is in Nova Scotia, where the sun isn't really much of a problem...

Hey guys I was diging through the shop today and I found some of the paint that I mixed while looking for theright paint code. This is one that is close but I can't find the correct one that I mixed that matched the car in the door jams and lower not so faded areas of the car. But this color has a code of 4C its called Med Sage that is the what Dupont calls it on the label. I remeber pulling this code off of a paint chip page that said thunderbird cougar at the top 1984. I'll see if I can get back to that store and scan to paint chips pages so we could have some have some on file here at the site. I'm not sure how they would be for matching colors but listing the name and code and a close proximity to the right color. Also as soon as I can find the right can that tells me the code and name to my t-bird I'll post it up so we can have an updated record. Also  I would like to thank Aerobird for all the effort he is putting into getting us up to date accurate information.

P.s. If I'm reading my rad tag correct I should have a factory paint code of 1Y.  Now first thing at work I'm gonna have to look it up in the computer to get you all a name for it. I know the color seems to be charcoal metallic but the name in the book had blue in  it. has more of a blue hue than the charcoal gray on the same paint chip page. Also the birth date of my T/c is 2/84

That would be awesome ipsd!

TurboCoupe50,
I have seen that! I've also seen it list the colors as 1987/1988 and 1989/1988. It's Ford, we'll never know for sure :P I have seen a Silver-Blue TC in Canada with a Shadow Blue interior that had the Mach 1 stickers, which is how I found out about the colors in the first place. Ever since then I've only seen the Red ones (there seems to be quite a few left) and been told about a few mystery silver cars and whatnot. I'm getting more and more interested in the 83-86 paint colors and what they look like plus the different interior names, whether or not they are actually different shades.

According to the dupont paint computer at work it calls the 1Y code dark Charcoal. I do believe that on those paint chip pages it has blue in the name.  I'll see if I get over to that other store on mon or tues to scan those paint chip pages.

Jeremy, I don't have solid two-tone information for 1985. The color in that photo should be 1Z - Medium Charcoal Metallic.

Nothing like quoting myself...but I lied LOL. I do have two-tone information for 1985 now:

- Black (1C)/Medium Charcoal Metallic Clearcoat (1Z)
- Silver Metallic (1Q)/Medium Charcoal Metallic Clearcoat (1Z)

That's it for 1985...more two-tone combinations were available in later years.

I find it intersting that Ford would clearcoat the charcoal bottom part, but not the top in black. I mean, just base/clear the whole car while you're at it, you know? I'm sure it was a cost-saving thing. Base/clear had to be expensive in 1985.

Mmmkay...let me clear a few things up for you. I could not find a Sage listed for any Ford vehicle in 1984, so it has to be a 1985 color.
- 4B was the lighter green metallic Cougar/T-Bird shade (Light Sage CC Metallic).
- 4C was a Tempo/Topaz paint and was a darker green metallic (Medium Sage CC Metallic).
- 4E was the solid dark green specified for the Cougar/T-Bird (Dark Sage).

So if the code you have on the can is correct, it's technically not the correct shade for a Cougar/T-Bird. If you say it doesn't match then that could explain it. I hope that helps a little.

Far as paint chips go...

Do you still have the tag on the radiator core support? That will give you the base color code.

Yes, but it is illegible.

I see the Silver Metallic bottom, but the top looks like Pastel or Light Reggata Blue, not Medium Charcoal Metallic.

Was that a hint? ;)

That photo...to me it always looked like just the reflection of the cement driveway on the bottom of the car, and the sky on the top part. That *should* just be a straight charcoal car. That's a difficult color to photograph (and I didn't take the photo...just "borrowed" it from that thar Intarweb).

It's not the reflection of the sky, the top is blue. I'd see Cougars [4-eye, w/o a 3rd light] with that color scheme a time or two a year 5-10 years ago (quite rare). I haven't seen that color scheme, besides mine, in a long time.

I noticed that Eric has updated Coolcats wrt color codes. The rollover swatches are a nice touch. (and it only took me a month to notice it :hick:)

Why is it, that out off all of the years and colors, only
1Z from '85 and 3U from '86 (3U from '85 shows only one color)
are labeled as "Standard", but are actually two-tone?
