My car does have a speed limiter

Now that my speedo is off by something like 35 mph I can tell you I do have a speed limiter.  All the symptoms I described the first time around now happen at around 3500 rpm, and I know my valves aren't floating at 3500 rpm.  It is like something is cutting out every other spark plug when I hit what I'm guessing is 85 mph, but the speedo is buried thinking its going 100+.

Maybe it's a 88 thing?

My sister's 88 base with the 5.0L would do the same thing the second it hit 182KM/H (112MPH). You could tell it still had plenty power/speed left when it was at 181 but the second the digital speedo flipped to 182 it was back to idle. If I kept the pedal to the floor it would slow down to, I think, 170-175 and it would cut in again go back up to 182 and then idle back again. It was difinently an electronic thing and not mechanical. I tried to keep it going 180-181 :)

It's a fuel cut-off...didn't I say that before? :D  Just kidding, sounds like it's time to recalibrate that speedo!

The speedo gear in the tranny is the one out of the 94 mustang, for 2.73 gears.  I had 3.27's, and it was off.  Now with 4.10's I can get that thing into the 90's in second gear.:hick:

When I did my mass air swap in the 88 XR7 I didn't run new wires for the speed sensor, mainly becasue I was lazy. But it cured the problem with the speed limiter. I have heard that you may have stalling problems when doing this but I was luck no problems.

See if you can find a 3.8 pin diagram for the computer there should be a pin marked DSS or something close to that.

When you cut this wire it makes the computer think that the engine is running but the car is not moving.

But then my ultra cool tripminder wouldn't work, and we don't want that. ;)

You could put in on a toggle switch for when you want to speed then flip it off to read your tripminder info. you could label it 'turbo boost' :D

If you cut the VSS wire at the ECM the tripminder should still work. The tripminder gets its vehicle speed info directly from the VSS sensor (just like the speedo does), not the EEC-IV. The only signal it gets from the EEC-IV is fuel flow, and the fuel flow data would remain correct, VSS signal to the ECM or not.

Just make sure you cut it at the ECM. If you cut it at the VSS itself you'll lose speedo and tripminder functions.

BTW, your tripminder is useless with the speedo being off so far. It may still be teling you your Miles Per Gallon, but it's measuring those miles wrong.

Just put a switch on the speed sendor input to the EEC... You can label it "FASTER"
