try starting fluid. That will tell you if its gas related. Change out the spark plugs, fuel filter as well. Let us know.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

EFI.....If it aint been started in 3 years it probably has some gummed up areas.  I'd start with a fuel filter change

Eather yes, it is starting fluid.  As haystack said, shoot some in and see if it will fire.

Your fuel filter could be clogged, as pual said, or the pump may be shot.  If there was any water in the tank in that time, it would have all settled to the bottom and rusted up the pump.

Look for the schrader valve (looks like a the thing that lets you put air in your tires) on the fuel rail, turn the key on and stick something in there and see if it sprayes fuel eveywhere.  If it does, it's probably something else.

I dunno if this'll help, but the 86 Capri I had, had a problem where the fuel pump would just quit, and it wasn't the safety shutoff switch either. After being stranded a coupla times, and dragging it back home with the tractor, I finally found that the harness on top of the tank was dirty up inside the contact points...a good cleaning, and some electrical grease had it fixed...
But do like the others have said, and you may want to drop the tank, new fuel pump, and filter, and while you have the tank down, un-hook the fuel lines on the engine end, and take compressed air to blow them out, before you change the filter, and after you take the old filter off.

Good luck, not many 1986 Capris around anymore...btw, Mine was an ASC/McLaren :flip:

You might wanna run some fuel injector cleaner through it as well (or even have the injectors professionally cleaned). I don't know what it is that happens to gas after 7 years, but I do know it ain't gas anymore and will almost certainly plug those injectors solid...

BTW, anyone see the Capri in MM&FF magazine this month? They actually covered a non-Ford, non-Mustang! And to top it off, they have an '85.5 SVO project car now!

yeah dropin the tank is gunna be a pain in the arse job because we dont have a hoist (sp?) well we wont do anything till the weekend just because the old man works afternoons and he dont trust me with keys . somebody wouldnt happen to know where all the relays and everything  electrical that has to do with the fuel pump / system are? i have a shop manual for it but it dosent have to much about the '86 fuel injected motor in it . just because it was the first year for the efi and last year for the capri .

No, actually I bought it from my guitar playin' buddy, who got bored with it, after he had bought it from somebody who didn't come off the title, he decided he didn't want it, so he let me buy it...
Yeah, your Capri IS better than the ASC is/was, mine was beat to shiznit, cause the guy that had before my buddy got it outran the cops in it...
4 times, ripped off all the GFX stuff...
Only good thing about it was the T5, wish I'd kept it, but I got more than what I paid for it, in the stuff I got as a trade for it. I paid 700 bucks for it...no title, it wasn't doing me any good, and sooner or later I'd have gotten in serious trouble with it...all the cops knew it, guy I got it from took it to a car wash one sunday afternoon, nearly got arrested for it...
