Removing harmonic balancer... September 05, 2005, 11:15:43 PM I just got to the point of removing the retaining bolt for the harmonic balancer. I got the pully off by locking the crankshaft by sticking a screwdriver through a hole in the drive plate like it says to do in my rebuild manual. Ofcourse when I tried the same for removing the main bolt it just bent the hole in the driveplate I was using. That doesn't make me happy. In any case I'd like to find another way to lock the crankshaft so I can get the stupid bolt off. Quote Selected

Re: Removing harmonic balancer... Reply #2 – September 05, 2005, 11:57:03 PM Uhh..maybe I should clarify. The engine is out of the car right now. I'm trying to get the bolt off the front of the crankshaft but I have no way to anchor the shaft so it won't turn. Currently the transmission end of the shaft is bare. Quote Selected

Re: Removing harmonic balancer... Reply #4 – September 06, 2005, 09:12:00 AM I have an impact gun but it's a cheap peace of that'll never get that bolt off. Quote Selected
Re: Removing harmonic balancer... Reply #5 – September 06, 2005, 12:41:43 PM Put two of the bolts from the pulley back in the balancer (don't thread all the way in) and stick your favorite leverage device (big screwdriver, pipe, breaker bar...) between them with one hand and crank on the balancer bolt with the other. I have done it like this many many times. :) Quote Selected

Re: Removing harmonic balancer... Reply #7 – September 07, 2005, 12:08:24 AM Actually the idea of putting that much downward force on the front of the engine while it's on the stand really freaks me out. Are you sure it's safe? Quote Selected

Something like.... I dunno.... an impact gun! Cheap or not, don't say it won't work until you've actually tried it. Quote Selected
