My new 88 xr7 has a key release. I want it gone. Is it simple to do like pull a pin or something, or is there more to it then that? I probably wouldn't go as far as swapping out column to get rid of it, but while it's in the garage and I am working on it, I practically have to get in the car to turn the key all the way on and off.

are you talking about the button under the steering column that must be pushed in order to release the key?

Can you tie something around the steering column to hold it in while working on the car?

Put an o-ring around the shaft, then push it up. It'll get stuck. Ta-daa

I believe this button is only on floor shift cars.
If for some reason you want to turn the engine off while still rolling, it will keep you from accidently locking the steering wheel.

Pretty sure it's still possible to do so on any another car.

Take the plastic off. Push on the button, watch the metal on top rise up. I'm sure you can figure out how to keep it up. (don't be dirty :D )

Being as this is my first floor shift car, I find it very,very annoying. I'll look into it soon and maybe do a quick write up on it.

Both my 86's have that button. One car is manual and the other is a slush-o-matic. If you take the column covers off and push the button up, you can shove a nut big enough to hold it up.
