4 cyl. T-5 question.... May 18, 2013, 09:34:24 AM My friend has a 4 banger Fox with a 5 speed. He's changing the worn bearing retainer. He stated that he bought one for a T-5, and it didn't fit. Is there a difference between the 4 and 8 cyl. bearing retainers? Quote Selected
4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #1 – May 18, 2013, 10:05:42 AM I just talked to my friend Curt, and he stated that the bearing retainer I gave him (my extra retainer) does not fit his transmission. So, something is different. Waiting for more info from him. Quote Selected

4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #3 – May 18, 2013, 11:15:52 AM The input shaft on the 4 cylinder T-5 and the v-8 T-5 are different. The pilot bearing tip is smaller diameter on the 4 cylinder T-5's than the V-8 cars. Any of the parts stores should have the correct bearing/bushing.Darren Quote Selected
4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #4 – May 18, 2013, 12:45:58 PM Thanks. Now to find a replacement bearing retainer. None in sight for the 4 banger. The V-8 is different. May have to machine the V-8 one to fit. To me, it appears that the difference is the thickness of the lip where the bearing race fits. If it were opened up, I think that would do it............but that's just an educated guess, of course. Quote Selected

4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #8 – May 18, 2013, 05:02:58 PM Darren, I found a guy on the Corral (actually a business) who has had this issue many times, and they mill the V-8 pieces to fit. He's going to have one done for us this Monday and ship it to us for the car. He's doing a steel one so that can't hurt. Quote Selected
4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #9 – May 18, 2013, 08:48:09 PM You got it they are different. Also you can use the 4 cylinder tranny in a V8 if you use a ranger DIESEL piolot bearing in the V8. Also the ratios are different. Quote Selected

4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #12 – May 19, 2013, 11:04:59 AM Vinnie was asking about the bearing retainer, and yes, they are different between the two, as the input bearings are different sizes. To me, it didn't look like there was enough meat on the V8 retainer to mill out for the larger 4 cyl bearing, but I guess it's been done. The 4 cyl bearing is a bigger dia AND taller, so the milling has to be deeper as well. Quote Selected

But i am sure Vinny has researched this and i am curious as people actually have machinists made new ones from scratch. As far as i know you cant make one fit the 4 Cylinder units. I could be wrong but i have had this issue a couple of times down the road Quote Selected
4 cyl. T-5 question.... Reply #14 – May 19, 2013, 09:19:17 PM I looked at a V-8 and 4 cyl. retainer side by side. The 4 cyl piece looks identical except for the wider opening to fit the bearing and race, and, the 4 cyl. retainer's wall for them is thinner. The company I contacted about this says they do these "conversions" all the time. The one we're getting (retainer) is solid steel, not aluminum and steel like the aftermarket pieces, so, being solid steel, I'd imagine it would be fine. Quote Selected
