If you really want to see what it's worth at a particular point in time, then put it on evilbay. If you don't want to sell it, then put a big reserve on it and just see where the bidding goes. I can tell you're not liking what the guys are telling you. In their defense, you asked for their opinions, so you're getting them. Toss it on evilbay for a week, see how high it gets, then come back on here and tell everyone they were wrong (or right). Either way, good luck with the car. I'm not in the market, but it looks pretty sharp to me!

so am i hearing this right, a dent a bit of rust makes a cougar  near worthless despite thousands of dollars worth of other work that has been done to it?

What we said was in our particular market in this economy  :D

The car looks and sounds nice but there is not a huge market for 20+ yr old Cougars here in East TN  and anything with any rust at all is avoided like the plague here . In your neck of the woods it may be different  , Of course our cars are niche vehicles you have to find a buyer who appreciates them.

Bottom line is its worth what someone will give you for it

FLSTCI71 has a good idea ....try ebay with a high reserve

I hope you get a big pile of money for it personally :D

when you rebuilt the engine, did you use ho parts? Is it still injected or is it carbed?
Does it have surface rust or are there holes? Is it inspected? Mileage on body?

That information will make it easier to put a value on the car.

I realize it isnt the best time to be selling a car with the economy the way it is, especially something that needs a little fixin.  i also understand that there are a select group of people that aactually respect/admire these cars.

Well, i have to say youu guys thats threw out the low numbers, thank you! I got a hair across my ass today and decided to tackle the heater core.  2 hours and she was out.  tomorrow ill get the new one and get some heat back in the car.

HA, if i keep getting hairs across my ass there wont be an asking price.  are there any aftermarket companies that make fenders?

i saw that one, when you add it to your cart it goes all screwy.  RockAuto.com com has them but it says without corning light.  I wonder if its the same otherwise?

If you do end up with fenders without the cornering light, you can always use trim without the light or else cut the hole yourself. Either solution would be better than a rusty fender.

A cougar is  near worthless based on how many buyers want only an 88 cougar XR7 vs. how many are for sale.  Unfortunately that ratio is heavily not in your favor (probably 3 per 20 Cougars for sale).  So those three can be picky and buy one in good shape.  Other people who would buy your car are considering other makes and models and would probably want a good deal or a pristine car.

The return on your thousands of dollars will only benefit how much easier you'll sell it.  Remember that you won't recover  thousands spent for someone else to fix it, either.  You'll do better with thousands in parts where you donate your labor.
