5.0 cover car bites the dust

The Hallett/CarFX project Mustang — featured on the December '09 cover of 5.0 Mustang — dramatically flipped over a tire wall at Hallet Circuit in Oklahoma this weekend, ending up on its roof.

The accident apparently happened at turn six of the track, and the results, as you can see from the gallery above, couldn't be any more dramatic. After ramping the tire wall, the car planted nose-first into the ground and flipped forward, coming to a halt on its roof. You can see in the post-pancake-flipping images that the bolt-in roll cage simply punched through the floor, completely failing in its duty.

Incredibly, neither the driver nor passenger were injured in the accident. Reminds us why we prefer weld-in cages with big thick contact pads.

I'd say the driver and passenger are lucky. That bastid is FLAT lol.

I was going to say, all that work and money and they didnt do a cage? But the fact that is punched though the floor is ridiculous!

I would expect a LOT more from a cage.They are very lucky to be alive.I wonder what that car WAS worth.I bet their cages get a lot better now.

Why would some one use a bolt in cage? I don't even road race and I know it's a stupid idea, kinda like bolt on subframe connectors.

One of the comments in the article was right on the money. "You can have the best cage in the world, but it won't do you any good if it's bolted to graham crackers." Like others have said, I guarantee their future cages will be much better.

Wow, a bolt in cage. Maybe they should reconsider bolt in cages legal in competition.

I think that the cage was good...
But the floor ...
They should have reinforced the floor ...

It could be the best cage in the world, but if it's not tied into anything underneath it does no good.
