Interior Dye

If anybody ever needs any interior dye, I have a place here close that has matched my interior perfectly.  They have books that contain color codes for all interior colors.  They take the code and mix the dye for me.

I have purchased the caynon red from them and have dyed armrests, console covers, plastic moldings, pull handle screw covers, speaker covers, seat belts, etc.  I am just amazed how easy this is... and how well it matches.

So, if you are ever in a bind, we can communicate and I'll go down there to see if I can get it for you.

If you wanted to change the color of your interior, that is easy enough to do.  Just dye it the color you want.

I have covered up tan, blue, and black with the caynon red.  The darker the base, the more coats.

I'm no expert at this either.  If I can do it, anybody can!

I do not see why not.  As long as it is prepped properly and you purchase the correct dye.

I am no expert... but this is where I got my initial information:

http://www.coolcats.net/modifying/interiorpaint.html

I tried the spray paint cans and found it really hard to find the correct color. In the process I wasted a bit of money.  I’m glad that I searched out this local company that mixes the stuff.

The place I found can mix both the vinyl and the lacquer dyes.  Which one you get just depends on what you are spraying.

Once mixed, mine did not come in a spray can.  There are a couple alternatives.  One, this company sells disposable sprayers.  These work ok for small jobs, but they are almost impossible to reuse.  They consist of a spray nozzle with a can of the propellant and on the bottom of that there is a straw thing and a glass jar you put the dye in.  They cost about $15.  The second way is to purchase your own sprayer to be hooked to an air compressor.  This method worked the best for me, plus I could re-use the sprayer.  I got my sprayer at wall-mart for about $20, but I think this was a find.  I would expect to spend more like $50.

Anyway.  Probably too much info… I’ll quit babbling.

The point I want to make is that anybody can do this.  I am sincerely a novice.  I didn’t even know that interior parts could be dyed until finding this site.  I just purchased the stuff, and went for it.

Not really just wanted to see if that was what you were looking for. You could probably get it paint matched at a auto body place or they could set you in the right direction.

*Edit* In looking through some older Ford/Mercury colors from 85-86 era on the DuPont website I'm not having much luck here either.

What you guys need to do is get up, get off the net, and actually go to a auto paint place. I work at a parts store that mixes paint. I can mix your dye and seeing how I'm a paint mixing store of many years I just happen to have the exterior.interior and body molding color chips all the way back to 60's. So take your part with you and have them break out the old books and look. Most places can mix what you want right then and there. Might have to find one that can put it in and aerosol can if you need instead of spraying form a paint gun.

here is an example of what you will have to look at.

Hope that helps

All things considered my nearest automotive paint store is over an hour away. The net is much easier than making a 2+ hour round trip to find out they can or even worse cannot help me.

and for future reference Dupont has all of those in a database on the internet.
