look at our fancy new boat anchor Reply #2 – October 03, 2008, 12:10:11 AM That's a steal. Quick, sell it to a Chevy guy for a profit and buy a good motor to replace it. Oh wait, you already said you were getting a Ford tomorrow.... Quote Selected

look at our fancy new boat anchor Reply #9 – October 04, 2008, 09:25:41 PM There's an article on building up a 348/409 in last month's Hot Rod. I don't usually read Chevy engine stuff, but I did read that just because I've always loved the W engines. Nothing against Chevy, it's just that there's only so much you can do with a 350 or 454 before all the stories are the same (I don't read MM&FF magazine anymore for the same reason).According to that article the truck engines actually have a slightly different casting. The combustion chambers are machined into the block on W's, not the pistons or head. The deck is actually not on the same plane as the top of the piston (when at TDC there will be a wedge shaped opening, the pistons will not sit flush with the deck like they do on a Windsor). The truck engines have a much larger combustion chamber that is actually machined into the top of the bore, and because it's machined into the bore it's not easy to make it smaller - you need pistons with a huge dome on them. The huge domes make the pistons really heavy, which is very hard on the rods. The engine HR magazine built was actually based on a truck engine but had custom pistons and rods (not to mention aluminum heads and a bunch of other goodies). The end result was really nice though... Quote Selected
