Yeah, and I figure that since I'm completely refreshing the bottom end of this engine, I can just focus on H/C/I down the road when I have the rest of my car ready for more power.

Just an update:  I'm purchasing an explorer intake with a 65mm TB for the setup.  The same guy thats selling me the intake is also selling GT40Ps; he said he'd sell them both to me for $430 shipped, which is a very good deal.  However, I'm looking into the idea of porting the E7s I already have; we can get work done cheap thanks to the local machine shop where we've had work done for the past ~15 years.  So later this week I should know which direction I'm headed.  I also plan to port the lower Explorer intake; lots of guys are hittin high 200s at the wheels with the same combo.

Get the GT40Ps (says the guy with GT40P heads ;) ) you'll like them and ported they are even better than ported E7s. Depending on how much port work you do you *may* be able to get away with keeping SD if you keep the stock HO cam. If you do go mass air it's easy enough to do. My combo (which is very similar to what you are looking at) ran fin on SD. I just went to mass air because I was tired of some funy idle problems it developed every once in awhile. Plus now that I have mass air I was able to lower the idle back down to stock levels so it has that great rumpty-rump idle :D

If you have any questions on GT40Ps or modifying the Exploer intake to get rid of those goofy vac fittings you won't use just pm me.

Oh and one more thing. If you keep the AOD put a converter in it. I should have put a 2400-2600 stall converter in mine when the engine was out but I didn't. Probably would have made a difference in the SOTP meter.

Personally, if I were in your situation I would forget about the gt-40p heads and put that money towards balancing the rotating assembly and flycutting your pistons/getting new pistons, decking the block etc. I would get the short block done right first. That way should you not be happy with the power level you can always upgrade to bigger heads and a bigger cam. Other wise you'll just end up tearing the whole thing apart later and doing it all over again...

My 2 cents..

I'm going to keep the short block stock, but it will be sent to the machine shop for honing and new bearings; it'll be completely refreshed.  And actually, in all honesty, im STILL not bored with the stock 5.0 HO's power...I'm just tired of the oil leaks.

@Tjet:  Yeah, I'll definitely want to clean up the explorer intake so I'll be looking for some info there.

Also, it's worthy to note that I'm also looking into a VERY good deal for some GT40Y aluminum heads.  I'll have more info on that soon, so stay tuned :) .

You can get an entire gt40p engine for $500 off car-part.com in your area.

Yeah, I realized that GT40P engines are cheap...oh well, I already have the engine and most of the parts.  I may be getting different heads anyway.

Just let me know what you need to know when you start working on it.

***UPDATE 6/24***

Alrighty, just sent out a money order for an upper/lower explorer intake with 65mm TB.  I'm excited to be getting the first parts in for the project!

Also, on July 5th, I should be heading down to Charlotte to meet the guy with the GT40Y aluminum heads.  I already have almost enough saved up for his initial asking price, and the full purchase is still 8-10 weeks away.  The guy I am dealing with is well respected on Corral and is going about this very professionally.  I'm looking forward to meeting him, dealing with him, and seeing/riding in his car!

That's it for now, stay tuned!  I'll be sure to post pics of the intake/TB once it arrives.  I'll be cleaning up the whole setup and then getting the lower ported, so there will also be progress pics.

The short block still needs to be disassembled the rest of the way (pistons, rods, and crank are still in it) and sent to the shop.  I'm currently putting my money towards the deals I've been able to find.  The heads are the big money pit and once I get those, I'll work on the rest.  I'm not rushing this project; my main goal is to have it ready to install by the end of winter/beginning of spring next year.  I'm also spending a little more time saving up for the aluminum heads; they're a bit more expensive than the cast Ps, but I think when it's all said and done, I'll be happier.  If the project done earlier, great, but if not, I'm still enjoying the car as it is.
