Mid/low 13sec 5.0 project (new video and pics 7/11) Reply #80 – February 26, 2008, 07:34:02 PM Yep, just regular ol' 19 lbers. It seems that the engine hasnt been tampered with much, if at all. Which is a good thing. No mistakes to have to fix. But won't know for sure until I start diggin in. Quote Selected

Mid/low 13sec 5.0 project (new video and pics 7/11) Reply #84 – March 02, 2008, 12:41:43 PM Well, the project is finally underway. Yesterday my friend came over and we tore the engine down (and yes, we labeled all the bolts and stuff). We found some nice surprises, such as the lack of sludge and the fact that the cylinder walls are in AWESOME shape. The crosshatching is clear as day and there are no rough edges around the tops of the walls either. It looks like the bottom end will be definitely reusable, which will save me lots of money. We're going to measure the bore and such before making the final decision, but it seems promising. I tried taking pics of the cylinder walls but they came out terrible (but you can still see the cross hatching in the 2nd pic). Here are the pics I have right now:There's still a long road ahead, but I'm glad to finally get rollin :) .PS - if anyone needs HO parts, drop me a PM Quote Selected

Mid/low 13sec 5.0 project (new video and pics 7/11) Reply #87 – May 24, 2008, 12:12:31 PM I've done some money saving and some research. I re-evaluated my goals and my parts lineup and decided I'd ask a few more questions on Corral. It's pretty unanimous that GT40P heads, Explorer intake, stock HO cam, 65-70mm throttle body, 1.7 rockers, and headers (for the GT40Ps) would bring me my goal for mid/low 13s. This would end up costing A LOT less and get me to my main goal. So that's the direction I'm heading for. Guess I should change the thread title to "13 sec Tbird project" haha. I thought I'd need more hp, but apparently not :) .I've also saved up some money and the bottom end should be heading to the machine shop in a couple of weeks for a honing and trip to the hot tank. While it's in there, I'll be gathering the rest of the parts. The nice thing about the budget drop is that I'm not as worried about having to get new pistons in case the bottom end needs boring. So that's where she lies now. Quote Selected

I feel a little better about my direction. I have found that you can get an Explorer engine with 50k or less for under $600, so that's where I'm going, with a twist. Currently our company sells ECMs for the Ford 4.2L(and I'm a calibrator), which has the same cam/crank pattern as the Explorer engine, and runs coil packs. As I left the company yesterday, I asked the owners if they would mind if I took an ECM and harness stuff to calibrate and they were on board. I'm pretty excited about it. Once I get to Iowa, I'll get a house, then an engine and start the harness build.I'll be anxious to hear how your engine performs. Quote Selected
