So what intake would you recommend?  I've heard from lots of people, like 86tbird, that the Cobra intake/TW heads are a very popular combo for that power range.

@86Tbird - Great information.  I know some guys that can do some custom cam work.  But if I'm understanding you right,  I'd have to pay Jay Allen for him to just recommend a cam?  I'll probably just have one custom made then.

He does offer the service for folks that really want an OTS cam, but it works out to be cheaper to have him do a cutom unit.

For a street intake, the GT-40/Explorer/Cobra is pretty hard to beat, particularly for the price of an Explorer unit.  They shine on low end torque.  Having a lower flowed and balance by a professional will enhance the performance.  I had the lower done by Panhandle Performance.  It was done beautifully, however, you can play the budget card on that!
There are intakes that perform better in the upper RPM range, but it may not be worth the trade off on loss of low end torque.  If you drag race a lot, you may see a benefit.
I did make 295 RWHP and 330 RWTQ when I used one of the Comp Cams, however, it was miserable to live with (plus it wouldn't pull past 5,600 due to valve train instability)!

Well my Tbird will always be used mainly on the street.  95% of the time.  So the low end torque is more important to me.  Also, around 300hp at the wheels is spot on where I want to be, so it looks like I'm on the right track.  I'm not looking for an engine that will spin high rpms either.  Just to 5500 or so.

You should end up with a really fun ride!

If you do work with Jay, he will usually help to sort out which injectors, rockers and throttle body will work best.  He will have you fill out a "build sheet", which lists all the specifics of your car, from weight, to gear ratio, transmission type, clutch or stall converter, fuel system, ect.  If there are parts of the combination you don't have, you may want to put in: "please recommend", he will.  Be prepared to educated, Jay will explain far more than expected and help you short cut any problems that he may see.  He becomes your advocate to get the most out of your project.

FWIW, expect to spend around $300+ on a custom cam alone. custom cams arent really needed for a "budget" project. those are for serious drag racers, who want every bit of available horsepower. you would do just fine with an OTS cam.

Well the comp xe264 is already $260.  Even so, which of the two cams would you guys recommend between the xe264 and xe270?  And with which TB/rockers?

I guess it depends on what is considered "budget".  IMHO, the amount of money spent upgrading heads, intake (including injectors, T/Body/Air Mass Meter), exhaust and a cam, has stepped up out of the budget category.  An extra $50-$100 on a camshaft that is designed to work with a combination, is a minimal addition.

The engine I have in my T-bird far from a serious drag racing piece.  With the addition of the custom cam, it has become an incredible street engine.  It has the ability to pull decent times at the track, get good gas milage, it is easy to live with around town and  great fun to drive!.  I did not get that kind of performace with an OTS cam.

Will OTS cams run? Of course, almost any cam within reason will run.  The question becomes: Will it run how you expect/hope?  I'm relating my experience.  There was DRAMATIC difference  between several OTS cams and the custom unit in my combination.  With the results I've seen, this is the only route I would consider in the future, even if the cost were considerably higher.  It has been the biggest bang for the buck item I have ever added to an engine (and I have bought a lot of camshafts and put together quite a few engine combinations!).

Everyone has an opinion.  Custom cams may seem hard to justify, as they cost more.  It can be money well spent.

86tbird recommended me to jay for my 347 project, and i gotta say, jay is an awesome dude. he really knows his stuff. and he's an easy guy to work with, if you actually try to work with him. i've seen people get upset when he tells you that you have a terrible set up going, and try to fight him and thats only when problems seem to arise. if you got a turd a'brewin, he'll tell you, flat out, but if your patient and try to work with him, he'll cut you slack cus he knows that you truly want to do it right. his biggest issue with people tend to be your valvetrain as a whole, everything needs to work together, and he knows what works and what doesnt. granted, my car will be more race oriented then your car, so i'm a little more dependant on everything cooperating. basically it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend, how willing you are to wait, and how willing you are to put up with any corners you cut now once the whole thing is done.

average compcams SADI core cam is $250
jay allen SADI custom cam (hyd, rol) is $300
jay allen billit core custom cam (hyd, rol) $400

you could probably get away with an SADI core for just street use. so about $50 more for one made specifically to your liking. but call him or email him with any questions, cus as soon as you fill out a build sheet, he assumes that youre ready to buy a cam.

Well guys, just picked up the engine yesterday.  It's complete, including accessories.  Seems to be the perfect starting point.  I'll get pics soon, but I'm exhausted and I have to go to work for a little bit today.
