told you so. did you ever end up putting those forged slugs in there?

Nope hyper. I'd have to run a low ammount of boost so I don't blow 'em up :hick: .

They do have the SD kit.....

I saw :D

It's probably a pipe dream though. It really doesn't need it, it's strong enough. Then again who doesn't like stupid ammounts of power..........

My psitons will have speed holes:hick:

The motor wasn't set up for a blower to begin with. If I ever do a blower it'll be something like a 331 with good heads, a blower cam, and a KB blower on it. But it won't go in this car. I'd really like to find an 86 5.0 T-bird to stuff that in............;)

Looking good :D . I think you need a 21 tooth purple auto trans gear for your speedo. Your local Ford dealer should have one. It costs ~$10 (that's what I paid for mine about 5 years ago).

Can anyone else comment on which speedo gear I need?  Tryin to figure out which one to get.

http://www.mustangforums.com/m_47676/tm.htm  Judging from the list in this thread, looks like I need a 19 tooth Tan gear.

Quote
Automatic Transmissions with 7 Tooth Drive Gear

    * 1983-1989 Automatic Transmissions

2.73 Gear Ratio / Blue 16 Speedo Gear

3.08 Gear Ratio / Gray 18 Speedo Gear

3.27 Gear Ratio / Tan 19 Speedo Gear

3.55 Gear Ratio / Orange 20 Speedo Gear

3.73 Gear Ratio / Purple 21 Speedo Gear

4.10 Gear Ratio / White 23 Speedo Gear

And look, a purple 21 tooth gear for 3.73s, which would back up Tjet's statement.

The chart you found is for Mustang AODs which have a 7 tooth speedo drive gear. T-birds and Cougars use an 8 tooth drive gear. Since you're car has an 8 tooth drive gear the 21 tooth driven gear should be pretty much spot on for you. With 3.73 gears I have to run a 23 tooth driven gear in mine because of the factory tranny 8 tooth drive gear. Mine's still ~2-3 mph off at speed though.

Ok thanks for that info.  I'll go pick one up tomorrow.

As for my engine project, I'll be picking it up this coming Saturday morning.  I'm sure I'll start tearing it down during the following week or weekend, and I'll definitely take pics.

But, now that I have decided almost everything about my setup, I need to decide on a cam and a couple of other small details.  So far, here's my checklist:

- Twisted wedge heads (single valve spring)
- 65mm or 70mm TB
- 1.6 or 1.7 ratio roller rockers
- Explorer intake
- 24# injectors

Ok, lets keep my goal in mind of 350 flywheel hp (a little more never hurts though ;) ).  Before I can really decide on the throttle body size or roller rocker ratio, I think it would be best to figure out what cam I will be getting.  This is where some comments and suggestions are very welcome.  I took a look at the Crower cams (15511 and 15510) and they just seem a bit expensive.  So now I turned my attention to the Comp Cams xe264 and xe270.  Which one of these would get me to my hp goal?  Here are links:

xe264:  http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2D35%2D349%2D8&autoview=sku

xe270:  http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2D35%2D351%2D8&autoview=sku

Then according to the cam I get, which throttle body and roller rocker ratio would work best?

The TW heads and GT-40/Cobra H/I swap are proven combination.  If you want to make best power and drivablity within your desired RPM range, a custom cam is the way to go.  Springs have to be matched to the cam (it's not uncommon to need an upgrade, even on new heads).  Check out SBFTECH.com, there is a ton of information on what goes into an ideal camshaft and spring selection.  Jay Allen, a sponsor/moderator on the site can design a cam for you or recommend an off the shelf (OTS) cam for a fee.  A custom SADI core cam (the same core Comp Cams uses), run about $300 from Jay (price is based on the info I saw on Jay's site. Camshaftinnovations.com).  A guess from someone on this board on which Comp Cam to buy, will still run you $260 and you may not be happy with how it runs.  If you pay Jay to pick an OTS cam, I believe it's $50, so the out of pocket is a little more than if you have him custom make one.  In this case, playing the budget card for $40-$50 is moot.
My experience with two very different engines (a 347/carb and a 306/F/I) made a believer out of me!  I've run a few Comp Cams, a Lunati and a Ford Motorsport cam in both these engines, searching for performance and drivablity.  It would have been much cheaper for me if I had gone custom to begin with.  My previous sources of information on cam selection were: Magazine articles, cam "tech lines" and various on-line forums.  This resulted in an expensive trial and error process, which ended when I got a cam and valve springs matched to my engine and driveline.

An Explorer intake is not going to get you to 350hp.  Maybe if it was ported by a pro.
