Exhaust Question, Please help

Hey guys,


 My stock exhaust just fell off...  They want over 200 bucks for a new stock exhaust.  I'm not gonna put out the money if I can get a nice exhaust system so..

I'm looking what will fit on my 1986 Mercury Cougar LS * Switched to a full consule + floor shifter for exhaust room *.

THe kind of set-up I want...

Long tube headers to cats to x-pipe to lers

By law u have to have cats in my state so I want to know if they make a sport cat or something nice..

Could someone link me to the parts which would fit on my cougar so I could buy it and get this back on the road.

For ease of installation and still have a good function,I'd use a set of shorty headers,then finish up the exhaust with cats,etc.You can purchase X-pipes with built in cats (etter flowing than a factory piece)from different companies.My X-Pipe (off road,no cats) came from Pypes (they make them with cats as well),and went on perfectly the first time,and weighed nothing compared to the factory Mark VII H-Pipe I was using.The mid pipes will have to be lengthened a little due to the length of our cars as opposed to the Mustangs (Use Mustang exhaust parts).My tailpipes are also made for a 5.0 Stang.Had to add a few inches to them as well,but the fit was great.Good luck.

i bought the h-pipe from jegs for 178.00 asked for the one that fits the 87-93 5.0 lx stang.  when i got it....NO PROBLEMS at all fit first time, NO cats either .

Go w/shortys headers there just easier and less of a headache and less problems especially w/your auto trans besides though long tubes are better its not that significant to be bothered all mustang exhaust parts should fit. Your only issue should be extending the tail tips about a foot.

Shorty vs Long Tube, I dont think the difference would be much on an SO 5.0.

I welcomed the dark side and currently am driving a 2000 Dodge Durango SLT plus, with a 5.9, Code named project "Night Runner"
Shes black on black, fully loaded, with headers, 180 tstat, e fan, straight exhaust into a cherry bomb vortex ler, full tune up, ported intake and T/B, MSD coil, and round aircleaner.
Mods to come: Fully rebuilt and heavily modded 46RE, and a richmond rachet locker.

short ones will clear the colum shift and steering linkages easier and you'll only see a couple of hp more with long tubes, along with a $100 or more larger bill...

Like I said above,shorties.They can be had for cheap on Ebay.Factory Stang headers are really cheap.I'm using BBK's.They have been great.no problems,no fitment problems.

alright but I changed my column to a floor shifter, so that that linkage isn't in the way :S.  Right now its getto styled with a TC Floor shifter tho, going to get the AOD shifter soon..

For a street setup its not worth the aggravation of long tubes another ex. (bottom out hit header) guys can go on. My opinion if you’re looking for HP which every one is put you time and money other place on the veh. You’re only going to miss about 10-15HP and its all on the top end. Street light to street light don’t worry about it.
If its driving you crazy try and fit equal length shortys in but even they might be a problem don’t know anyone on here running them with the AOD

Longtubes aren't just for top-end...they help boost the torque curve all around...the cheap and easy way is factory HO shorties...I also have a set of those HO shorty headers...if you want them over my long-tubes, they're yours for $20 next time you come down.

long tube will not fit without major modding to them and its not worth it from what i have heard.
