Shelby GT500 Super Snake

I put about 60 miles behind the wheel of an '07 Shelby GT500 last Saturday and as fun as it was, I would like to do the same in one of these.

SHELBY AUTOS AND FORD RACING TO BUILD 600+ HP STREET LEGAL SHELBY GT500 “SUPER SNAKES

Las Vegas – April 27, 2007 – Shelby Automobiles will use newly-developed Ford Racing GT500 performance packs to help transform a limited number of 2007 and 2008 Ford Shelby GT500’s into fire breathing “Super Snake” coupes. The Super Snake post-title package will include enhancements to the Ford Shelby GT500’s handling, styling and power; tuning options will range from a warranted 600 HP V8 to over 725 HP (unwarranted). Only a limited number of Super Snakes will be built per model year at the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas beginning in late 2007.

Note: Amy Boylan, Shelby President, is actively posting in this forum answering questions.

“My team at Shelby Automobiles is always working on new ways to build better performing cars” said Carroll Shelby. “I told them that I wanted to build a vehicle that could blow the doors off of most anything on the planet. By partnering with Ford Racing, we’re giving enthusiasts a Mustang with that level of performance.”

Working together at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and in Dearborn, Ford Racing and Team Shelby developed the aggressive suspension and engine package specifically for the car.

“Mustang enthusiasts are demanding more from both Ford Racing and Shelby Autos” said Jamie Allison, Manager of Ford Racing Performance Group. “The GT500 Super Snake package, with its higher horsepower levels and balanced track-inspired tuning, satisfies those demands and then some … in a uniquely Ford – Shelby way.”

In 1967, Shelby American built one 427-powered GT500 “Super Snake” for Mel Burns Ford. Carroll Shelby drove it at the Goodyear test track for tire promotion film production. That car reached lap speeds of over 150 mph and a top speed of 170 mph. The new Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be equally potent.

“The name ‘Super Snake’ is legendary because the one that Shelby built was the pinnacle of muscle cars in 1967,” added Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “We’re bringing that concept forward 40 years for customers who own a Ford Shelby GT500. We’ll give their car amazing new capabilities.”

Ford Racing and Team Shelby developed the GT500 Super Snake package which will include:
• Ford Racing Supercharger upgrade kit (SuperPack 600) producing over 600 horsepower and 590 ft.-lbs. of torque
• 6-speed manual transmission with 3.73:1 rear axle ratio
• Ford Racing performance exhaust system
• Ford Racing Handling Pack offering unique performance suspension tuning including Dynamic adjustable dampers, lowering springs, tuned stabilizer bars, and front strut tower brace
• Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels
• Ford Racing short-throw shifter
• Baer 6 piston brakes with Shelby cast calipers and larger rotors
• Front brake cooling ducts
• Unique carbon composite hood featuring classic Shelby design
• ‘Shelby’ lettering across the front edge of hood and rear decklid
• 'Super Snake' vehicle badging
• Carroll Shelby signature embroidered headrests and floor mats, and other Shelby designed components
• Official Shelby CSM dash plate

In addition, while the full Super Snake package will be available exclusively through Shelby Automobiles, many of the products comprising the Super Snake package will be available from Shelby Automobiles and Ford Racing starting in June.

Worthless? How so?

At any rate, those cars will be so ridiculously priced (due to markups) that everyone will bitch and moan.

I'm just curious, why would you say that?

Even die-hard fans (myself included) are getting completely sick of seing the name every time you turn around. This is the second 'Special Edition Shelby' this week! Seriously, they just debuted the Red Stripe at the Shanghai Motor Show. He sells 'Appearance Packages' for V6 and all other Mustangs, which means he's ricing up cars now for a fee. What's next, the Shelby New Holland GT7050?

There is now nothing special about a Shelby.

Well, I hate to tell you this, Dude, but much like Roush and Saleen and a host of others, that's one of the things Shelby does and is famous for.

Maybe you'd prefer he does another K-car package?

He did ONE K-car. Try and rattle off how many Special Shelbey's he's made just in the past twelve months. He shut down every Tom Dick and Harry that sold anything with a snake on it, then flooded the market on his own.

Don't get me wrong. I like the Shelbys of the day, and even liked the new ones when they first came out (the KR looks nice too.......... and looks are pretty much the only difference, just like in the 60's). I just don't know why they have to make a press release every time the old man farts, then dedicate the skid mark as a new limited edition model Mustang. "We'll call this one the Red Stripe!"

To compare, the C6 is three years old and this is the first time we see any major change to the car. There's a press release on the updates that are happening to the base model (no special edition, so no special price) with no fanfare whatsoever, and the car is getting a brand new motor!

I'd call a 600+ horse Mustang newsworthy. Shelby might be whoring his name, but if that means performance cars who are we to complain?

Of course, some of the Shelby Mustangs are questionable, such as the Shelby GT ($35k for a Mustang GT with $2500 worth of bolt-ons and a Shelby sticker???)

As for the Dodge Shelby's (Shelbies?) they might not be much today, but in the 80's they were quite respectable. Didn't some Shelby Dodge's make somewhere around 210 horses?

Like I said, I like some Shelby's. The GT-500, sure. The Super Snake, sure, because of the boost in power.

The GT-H? The GT-H Vert. (seperate press releases)? The 500K.R. with no changes other than looks? The Red Stripe? The CS6 (If you want a Shelby, why are you buying a V6?)? The WCC (West Coast Customs............ isn't that what Shelby does to begin with? He needs the ride pimpers to help him out?)? The 40th Anny. GT500? And, as Carmen said, the Shelby GT? These are all wastes of the name that used to have a certain rarity to it.

I'm not just bitching to bitch. I think he's shooting himself in the foot, and his name will be worth squat (compared to what it used to mean) when it's all said and done.

He's shut down everyone selling that snake emblem because it's a registered trade mark. HIS registered trademark. Carroll Shelby doesn't want every Tom, Dick, and Harry using his trademark to make cheap  to sell as genuine when it's not. That's what ruins someone's name.

As for the C-6, look up Calloway ( callowaycars.com ) or Zip ( zip-corvette.com ) or dozen others. They do the same thing with the Vette that Shelby and Roush do with the Mustang and AMG does with mercedes. And they have several levels of tuning available, same as Shelby. That's just good sense. That's why Ford offers several different performance levels in the mustang themselves.

I can guarantee you Calloway will shut down anyone using his trademarks on their product as as will AMG and anyone else with any kind of reputation. On the other hand if a company doesn't have a good reputation, no one wants to use their tademarks.

My opinion still stands that his reputation is thinning every time he sells an identical car as a new model. You look at the old Shelbys. Every one of them legendary. No one will say that about the Shelby GT, or most other ones I mentioned above. In twenty years saying "It's a Shelby" will mean as much as saying "It's an HO."

I think oldraven has a point.  It does seem like the name is starting to lose its aura and rarity.  And sure, different levels of tuning are fine...but a V6?  I dont even like regular Mustangs with V6s (if youre gonna buy a muscle car, buy a MUSCLE CAR, dammit!).  But to each his own.

Im sure he did the tractor as a joke, i dont really care it seems that the horse power wars may be heating back up at least between chevy and ford. Anything that gives the HP wars a kick in the ass as limited as it may be is a friend to me.

Yea, placing your name on limited production 600-725hp mustangs = complete deterioration of the Shelby name.

Oh yea...
