Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O April 25, 2007, 05:36:42 PM I found a TC with an auto floor shift and the gears read 123ONRP I think the car is an 87 or 88 Any idea what tranny that would be?Would that tranny handel a 5.0 HO and is it any better than an AOD? Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #1 – April 25, 2007, 05:44:58 PM A4LD.I really don't know if it could handle a V-8's torgue. One of the TC guys may know. Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #2 – April 25, 2007, 05:47:05 PM no way in hell!!! They can't even barly take the 2.3 if you baby it with the 2.3 yea they take it, both autos my dad bout were blown. Build the aod if you dont want to switch to a 5 speed. Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #3 – April 25, 2007, 07:02:39 PM Daboss said it right on the money - the A4LD was a weak tranny (the LD means Light Duty) that couldn't handle the power a 2.3 Turbo dished out (which is why the automatic TC was detuned to 155 horses, VS 190 in the 5-speed). Won't bolt up to a 5.0 anyway... Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #4 – April 25, 2007, 07:33:36 PM and even with 155 hp it still rips them apart! Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #5 – April 25, 2007, 10:37:48 PM Hang on, I'm confused. Is the engine on the Auto's detuned? I was under the assumption the 190 horses are still there, but can only be unleashed when a 5-speed swap occurs. Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #6 – April 25, 2007, 10:48:24 PM The engine is detuned. More conservative ECM tuning w/ limited boost, mainly, but I think (but certainly not sure) the IHI is actually smaller on the autos as well Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #7 – April 25, 2007, 10:48:38 PM the computer is different, not sure what else was done, i think that is what took it back. Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #8 – April 25, 2007, 10:54:53 PM It's ECM/Boost controller ONLY. Bypassing the BCS with a Gillis at 13-15 psi puts the auto's right back to 190. The IHI's are the same. The wastegate actuator is different (7 psi bypassed with no valve vs 14 psi on the 5-speed) and where the boost/power difference comes from. I had a rebuilt A4LD with a aftermarket torque convertor, big @$$ cooler, and shift kit and it lived 100,000 miles behind 17psi. Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #9 – April 25, 2007, 11:06:32 PM So.. What part of the linkage, Console, Shift Handel, etc. (Obviously NOT the tranny itself) would aid me in changing my Column shift to Floor shift? JUST the black console? Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #10 – April 25, 2007, 11:24:35 PM Pretty much. I will have the entire floor shift setup out of my Sport for sale soon. Quote Selected
Automatic Turbo Coupe 123O Reply #11 – April 27, 2007, 11:31:46 AM A 5 speed TC will run and boost to 15psi on the A4LD processor, been there done that...I believe the only actual difference is the bleed orifice, to the wastegate that's larger... Bypassing the BCS and connecting the lines together on the turbo will net approx 12-13psi on a automatic TC(been there done that as well)...My automatic IHI went on a 5 speed TC(complete with wastegate) and it would only boost 8-9 PSI, till I swapped the fittings... Well worth the money.:D Quote Selected
