Bad news..........

I was getting ready to leave for my favorite salvage yard this morning and the car wouldn't shift past second.Adfter second,the engine revved to 6000+.I pulled over QUICK,and popped the hood.The TV cable had let go.I checked the tranny fluid,and it had a lot of black in it and smelled bad.I got the car home,swapped the TV cable,fluid,filter,added a bottle of Lucas,and no luck.The tranny is dead.Hopefully tomorrow or Sunday,I'll have the spare in.I'll keep you posted.

Ah man, thats terrible.  I had the EXACT same thing happen to me, but I didnt let her revv that high and I was able to baby the car home without breaking anything.  I hope everything turns out ok for ya.

I didn't mean for it to rev that high.Immediately after it hit second ZOOOOOOOOOOM.It'll turn out alright.I'll just swap the old tranny out.I have no choice.I can't really afford to have it rebuilt.An AOD rebuild is ugly expensive.

Yeah, when that happened to me, it did rev really quickly; I think I was able to let off before she got past 4 grand.  Luckily, I was still able to drive (albeit slowly) and get her home...and it didnt happen far from home either.

i remember when the grommet on my tv cable broke. it was well AFTER i joined this place and read all of coolcats and knew about it too! but i was like 2 miles from home, coming home, 30 mph road, suddenly the gas pedal was easy to push and it was shifting really weird and and at odd times. i just drove it gently home, and once or twice it did seem to rev up but i think i drive the thing so God-awfully gently that it couldnt kill itself or something :hick:

as i pulled in the driveway suddenly it clicked. i shouted "oh shiznit!!" popped the hood sure enough it was dangling. grabbed a HEFTY cotter pin, as thick as the hole is, put it in there. that thing will NEVER fall off in a million years.

that sucks man, although i love "...I'll have the spare in". :giggle:  so i cant say that sucks too bad because you HAVE a spare. for me it would be off to the shop, spend God-awful amounts of money to get it rebuilt :bricks1:  or try and find a spare in a JY. id be pretty sunk though. thats my main reason for babying my car, the tranny. after all ive read here the aod might as well be made of friggin GLASS.

And you'll have a whole set of new problems if you use a T5... Never again, they get really ugly inside when they bust...

Thats identical to what happened to me.  My dad even fixed it while I was at work...with a cotter pin!  Funny how once he did that, the throttle response was WAY better than before.

Also, I dont know if you need to baby the car to keep the tranny together, just dont constantly stress it.  No reason to have done the HO conversion if you're just gonna baby it around :flame: :toilet: :evilgrin:

yup.

@kingcars,

OF COURSE im gonna open 'er up from time to time :evilgrin:
but for everyday commuting, i dont need speed all the time. im not that kind of driver. i like to cruise leisurely. but i want it to be there so whenever i need/want it, i can whip it out.

one of the more frequently occurring times is getting on The Northway, I-87, here, where people are flying along, and even if theyre going 55 like theyre supposed to (not likely), if they cant get over will they let you in? nope. nope, so if you want to shove your way in there you need power, and i was able to at WOT but now i can do that and they will be fading away not still closing the gap.

i also wonder if i got in the habit of driving it harder if i might accidentally lose track of my speed frequently and risk a ticket. NO WAY. not an option, so thats a big factor too.

Tomorrow morning (Saturday),we're going to get started around 8:30 and get the job done.It shouldn't take too long.I'm going to rent a tranny jack.They make life easy,and the guy is going to let me have until Monday for $10.00.No problem.I should be back in business before lunch.Next week I'm going to start the interior swap.and hit the boneyard that I missed today.I was really looking forward to that.....a lot.Oh well,the tranny is the priority right now.More news as it happens.
