how much HP will a turbo automatic take? Reply #6 – February 11, 2007, 12:34:07 PM Will an AOD even fit the 2.3T? I think the bolt patterns are different. Quote Selected
how much HP will a turbo automatic take? Reply #7 – February 11, 2007, 01:13:41 PM C4 or bust. A4LD's are good for about 200rwhp with a killer rebuild and a big tranny cooler. I had mine for 5 years and 130K like that. Anything more though... Quote Selected
how much HP will a turbo automatic take? Reply #8 – February 11, 2007, 01:21:39 PM i know a pinto c4 will bolt up but what about a regular c4. And what year of a4ld should i use and will it bolt up? Quote Selected
how much HP will a turbo automatic take? Reply #9 – February 11, 2007, 02:13:14 PM the 2 other tc birds my dad bought with the a4ld both were dead, one had only 2 and 3, and the other was blown. Matter of fact the blown one is hanging under my black car, in place of what was a 5 speed. Why not do a manual swap? From what ive seen stay away from the a4ld. Quote Selected
how much HP will a turbo automatic take? Reply #10 – February 11, 2007, 02:43:11 PM Not a transmission guy, but I believe any C4 should bolt up as long as you use a 2.0 or 2.3 (Lima) bellhousing. As for adding an A4LD, I believe this tranny uses computer controls. You'd have to use a computer from an 87-88 TC, and probably have to modify the harness. But again, I'm not a transmission guy, so I'm not 100% sure... Quote Selected
how much HP will a turbo automatic take? Reply #11 – February 11, 2007, 03:37:59 PM Most people run away from the A4LD trans... it is known for it's weakness behind a 2.3t. If you need overdrive I would at least consider a T-5 swap. If overdrive is not an issue then C4's have a plentiful aftermarket. Not sure on the differences... here's some literature.http://carbdford.com/viewtopic.php?t=5731Exploded Viewhttp://carbdford.com/viewtopic.php?t=6788I'll continue to research in the meantime...EDIT:Hmm... here is some info on the A4LD, it has an EEC controlled torque converter. It also appears to be not as bad as it seems.http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/AutoTransFix/A4LD_Fix.htmHere's some A4LD buildup partshttp://www.transmissioncenter.org/a4ld.htm Quote Selected
