XR7, 1986, meaning, it has a C3, not an A4LD.

SO what kind of tricks can i do to my c3 to make it live behind 230 -250 hp. What would be need to swap in a c4 from a v8 or an aod ?

Will an AOD even fit the 2.3T? I think the bolt patterns are different.

C4 or bust. A4LD's are good for about 200rwhp with a killer rebuild and a big tranny cooler. I had mine for 5 years and 130K like that. Anything more though...

the 2 other tc birds my dad bought with the a4ld both were dead, one had only 2 and 3, and the other was blown. Matter of fact the blown one is hanging under my black car, in place of what was a 5 speed. Why not do a manual swap? From what ive seen stay away from the a4ld.

Not a transmission guy, but I believe any C4 should bolt up as long as you use a 2.0 or 2.3 (Lima) bellhousing.

As for adding an A4LD, I believe this tranny uses computer controls. You'd have to use a computer from an 87-88 TC, and probably have to modify the harness.

But again, I'm not a transmission guy, so I'm not 100% sure...

Most people run away from the A4LD trans... it is known for it's weakness behind a 2.3t. If you need overdrive I would at least consider a T-5 swap.

If overdrive is not an issue then C4's have a plentiful aftermarket. Not sure on the differences... here's some literature.

I'll continue to research in the meantime...

EDIT:
Hmm... here is some info on the A4LD, it has an EEC controlled torque converter. It also appears to be not as bad as it seems.
