4 bbl carbed 232/3,8liter idea, What Your impressions?...

Okay,

I have a couple of mods to do this winter on My bird, BUT one I'll loving to do is a 4 bbl conversion, I have a 2200 (or something like this) stock motorcraft on this, and I'' like to try a FOUR barrel on that V6, I have an old 4100 from a Marquis 460ci 1974 sitting on My store and I'm willing to put on My engine...

Okay, the studs are not spaced correctly, and this and this, So this is a little thing to do for Me, made a spacer, ect, ect, the question, IF I put this, and adjust the carb, when happens next?, the car run too rich, the four barrel when activated will blow too enough gas on the intake and stall, or?, Your suggestion WITH THE STUFF I HAVE!, if not I don't do this mod...

Here is a microsoft paint idea of this...

I ask before only just because I don't want to make this adaptor for nothing, I one of You have experienced this or hace any experience on this kind of mod's, Your help will be very very appreciated...

Thank You very much in advance,

Best regards,

Pics was not loaded for the carb spacer...

P.S. This spacer will be a 3/4 to 1 inch thick full steel...

all the best...

Truthfully, without changing the intake you're probably wasting your time. A bigger 2bbl would probably be better than a 4bbl, as the engine is only gonna suck air thorough those two little holes anyway...

I used a Holley 2300 2bbl on my 82 5.0 Mustang for a while after the factory one took a poop.  It's 500cfm carb, which may be a bit big for a "stock" 3.8.  I think they also make a 390cfm one as well.  the 500 cfm one is a competition piece...and has no choke on it.  Ran well though.

I agree with TC though....it will be a waste of your time to bolt a big 4bbl carb on.

Yes, youd need a small carb for a 3.8L. If youre hell bent, get a larger 2bbl, or you will lose a lot of your velocity and throttle responce. Not to mention, itll be really hard to tune.
It's Gumby's fault.

You might get a small Holley performance carb, like the List# 7448 350cfm 2bbl to work, but you will never get an OEM 4bbl to work in this case.
The calibration is different, and most of it is designed into the carb, and not intended to be changed.

the first thought that came to my mind when i read this is,,,,,,  TOO MUCH FUEL means CYLINDER WASH along with all the bearings.  in most cases,,the addition of or the ability to have more AIR is more important than fuel.

The problem with comparing an 4 bbl to a 2 bbl is the way they rate the cfm differs, the apples to oranges comparison, comes to mind.Back in the 80's ford motorsports offered a cam for the 3.8.They said to use the 500 cfm holley on the cfi manifold. But,if you look around they use 500 holleys and it's smaller brother the 350 cfm 2 bbl on ford 2.3 four banger. The 302 loves the 780 cfm and in basic form the 3.8 is a 302 X .75 ,right. As you you look down the throat of manifold carb mounting pad the real problem becomes apparent,it is a little small. This restriction is your problem, now some fun time with a die grinder will really help.

i dono what 3.8 your talking about,, the one i know has intake port diameters of 1.58'' x 2.  The 3.8 has decent openings on the intake.  Its the butterfly / lower half of the CFI that makes you wanna puke.  On a positive note, the egr spacer matches intake diameters of 1.58x2  as well.

The holly 750 and 650 Eldibrock below (top left / right) compare to be in the same range on openings as the 3.8 intake.

the problem is the throat diameter on the lower half of the CFI,,NOT THE upper HALF.

on the bottom right and bottom middle are two examples of two cfi's with the upper half laying off the the bottom left.  The bottom right was suppose to be on the 5.0L cfi cars which infact does have larger butterflies and matches the 3.8 intake perfectly.  Unlike the bottom middle wich has smaller butterflies intended for the 232 engine.

Now....
flip the two cfi units over,, bottom center and bottom right, and you see that its not the butterflies but the throat diamter that is the issue in the lower half of the CFI.  If Ford installed larger butterflies on thier 5.0 engine,, why in the heck didnt they make the throat larger on the lower half of the cfi as well.

I would suggest you find a decent 5.0 CFI and break it in half (not literally) then hone out the obvious area that needs to be honed to port match perse the butterflies.  Next, i would remove the injector screens and reassemble.  maybe try out the blue top injectors that come stock with the 5.0 cfi.  its up to you.

nevertheless, is a throat diameter of the lower half of the cfi that is the first and foremost problem.  next would be valve size ect but thats a different story.  If you can get it to breath better , you will notice a difference.,,,big time.

there is a third breed of CFI not shown here and its found on the CFI MUSTANG engine which has even larger butterflies than the 5.0 i show belowl, maybe you will have better luck than i did looking for one.  The 5.0 cfi's are found on most pass cars made by ford from i think 82-85.

jcassity,OK I belive that you are including the TBI mounting plate as part of the manifold.I should have been clearer. It may be better to say that the flow is resticted by the smaller runners and not by carb selection.By addressing the runners with die grinder too enlarge and possibly create a swirl or vortec effect, flow can be increased.

those are your words,,not mine.:screwy:
The Egr plate matches perfectly to the intake.  Of course now that you bring up the runners, thats something else that can be done, but then he still has the heads to deal with,,,then the valves,, another story.

Yes,I see your point.my fault let's start again.Do you even think the stock manifold is worth reworking.I belive it is possible, may not easy but,for those with more time than money, maybe only choice.
