Engine Tech / 87' Cougar Won't Start
Well it turns out it is fuel related. After I tested for spark I ran to the store and picked up some starting fluid and sprayed some into the throttle body while I had someone try and start the car, it cranked right up. The fuel pump seems to be working, it comes on when you turn the key over. I'm not 100% sure the gas is good but at this point I'm going to go ahead and replace the fuel filter to make sure it's not clogged and get rid of the old gas. What's the best way to get the old gas out? Siphon it out?

I'm fairly sure my cousin added some Sta-bil to the gas before leaving although I can't be 100% sure. I even added a gallon of premium just to be sure there was enough gas to move it.
I have a big lack of tools, lost alot of them when I moved, so I'm going to have to test for spark in a little bit riskier way. I'll pull a wire and connect it to a spare spark plug and see if I'm getting spark. That should also tell me if I have a problem with the coil or distributor if the spark is white and not blue. I used that method to diagnose a bad coil on my cousin's Mustang before he sold it and it worked then so hopefully it'll work for me. A coil isn't but $20 so I'm hoping that's what it is since I was planning on giving the car a major tune-up anyway.
What are the symptoms of a bad ignition control module?

Engine Tech / 87' Cougar Won't Start
I moved away last year and I moved my Cougar to my cousin's house. The understanding was that he would start and drive it around a few times every month to keep it up. Well he ended up getting deployed and the car has been sitting for a few months shy of a year. I went to look and it and it looks rough but nothing a wash and wax couldn't fix. I brought a battery for it and tried to crank it; since it hasn't been started in a little while I cycled the key a few times but all it does it spin. You can hear the fuel pump and smell fuel so I'm thinking it's probably ignition related. Where would you start looking first?

It's a 5.0 by the way.

wow thanks lol this is alot of stuff. Idk the Single Spokes were what i was looking for at first but the ones vin has are awesome. buuut an extra few hundred pesos

It's all up to you, it's your car, but the 10th anny Cobra's look better on our cars IMHO. There actually the wheels I'm switching to on my 20th, but I'm getting mine powdercoated gold like the stock wheels.

Body/Appearance/Interior / I have a paint problem

Eric, I didnt say what KIND of paint.  Krylon makes some great colors nowadays! LOL

You may kid, but I've seen some pretty decent rattle can paint jobs in the past. Florida wasn't too hard on my paint, but someone decided to shoot my car so I have to get a new paint job now anyway. I was thinking about trying out Maaco. Some locations are better than others, it just depends on whose running your local Maaco - someone with experience, or someone who doesn't care how good of a job they do. You could always go there and see if they've got any cars they've recently painted to see the quality of their work. I've seen some py paint jobs come from Maaco, but I've also seen some pretty decent work too. If they do a pretty decent job, it would be better than faded 20 year old paint....

I'd be less worried about the paint and more worried about the engine and transmission with that mileage. ;)

I assume your talking about Ponys. They are pretty nice rims, but if you want a different kind of rim I would hold off. Save up every penny, if you pass on these you are $100+ closer to the rims you really want. Not to mention that you'll have to pick up two tires for these too.
BTW, are you talking about the Cobra Rs or the 93' Cobras? I dream of a 87/88 Turbo Coupe with 93 Cobras.....

Good example of what??

What not to do to your 'Bird or Cougar. Poor car.

I wish Turbo Coupes were more plentiful around my area. I may break down and buy the one I've been eyeing with 250k miles. I just don't know if I can trust a car with that kind of mileage though. I don't want to buy it just to rip the motor apart either.

yup that was me

That's a good indication of how uncommon these cars are. There are actually quite a few members building up in NWFL, eventually we'll all have to meet up.

I'm new here. I'll do the standard hi this is me stuff here after I take some pics. Just to chime in here, I picked up an 88 thunderbird off craigslist in NWFL  two days ago to use as a DD.

Hmm, another person in NWFL. What kind of 'bird did you pick up?

At this point fox T-birds and Cougars are just about totally absent from the streets. I've seen two Cougars and one Turbo Coupe in the past, saw them once and never saw them again. The Turbo Coupe was pretty recent though. I came really close to writing the web address for this website on a piece of paper and leaving on the windshield.
I do have to say that it's nice driving something that isn't parked on every other corner though. *cough* Mustang *cough*

Most of the time when I find 'birds or Cougars on Craigslist around my area they are non-running. If I had a way to pull it I'd buy this 'bird I found a couple of days ago.

the throttle cable just pops off of the throttle body. It is one peice more or less with the tv cable. There shouldn't be any adjustment required. I also swapped on the H.O. upper/throttle body, and I could tell absolutely no difference. Vacuum lines sucked to swap over. Use the parts from the old intake and swap them onto the new one, if you choose to go that route. I ended up swapping my IAC, TPS, and all the threaded vacuum inserts from the old intake setup. With the IAC that was on the new intake, the car would rev to 1500RPM and stay there. Don't forget to get the "upper plenume" gasket before doing the swap.

Also, your heater sounds like the classic heater core problems. Gets clogged or just dosen't work. Leave it in there long enough, and it might blow antifreeze all over the inside of the car.

So if I just pop the cable off and don't really bother with it I won't have to adjust it when I reinstall it on the throttle body? If that's the case that'll make things alot easier. I'm thinking about just picking up an Explorer intake and throttle body. Swapping will be a bit more involved with the Explorer intake, but it should be worth a decent gain.

heater core. I'm about to get a dash cap, new carpet and floormats so I'll have to fix it. Wishful thinking, but there's not an off chance that it could be caused by something else?
