Look what i did!

I dont know what happened. I was taking my girlfriend home, was coming off of an on-ramp at about 1/2 throttle in 2nd gear, built about 15psi, it surged, and i heard a wonderful grinding noise. This is what i found today.
It's Gumby's fault.

I did that too, in my Volvo, on Christmas day, two days after I bought it. 200 miles from home. Sucks, don't it? :(

Well, whats interesting is that the turbo itself isnt done for. The bearings are still good, theres little-to-no shaft play, it spins freely, its just the wheel got chewed up. It doesnt appear that anything got in there, so its possible that compressor surge took its toll.

Dunno looks like sumpthin' went through it to me.... Anyway if the bearings ain't bad now they will be, cause its gonna be big time out of ballance... Possibly a piece of the impeller broke and went through it, course guess that gets back to compressor surge...

Im babying the car untill i pick up another turbo, right now, the plan is to buy a turbo better suited for my setup, and keeping this one. After a while, i want to build it, using a stage 3 turbine housing, a super V wheel and compressor housing, maybe some drop-in ball bearings, and let it sit untill i either build up a nasty engine, or blow another turbo.

I have a turbo in mind, im waiting for some feedback from the company, and probably within 2 weeks, ill have turbo waiting for the car.

I am looking for a new turbo as well but not really wanting to go with another TO4E.  but then not wanting to spend an arm and a leg for one.

That sucks. Maybe you can just get an insert to replace it. I would tell you to go over to turboford.net. They might have some used turbo's in the for sale section. Also they could help you with making a good turbo selection for you setup

I found the turbo that will work well for my setup, its a T3/T04E 50-trim. Im waiting on a reply from the seller to see what turbine housing it has on it. Its also an "antisurge" turbo, so im waiting on a reply on the details about that.

Been there done that, in my case the nut that hold the wheel to the shaft was rattling around in the housing... and the exhaust wheel was in the cat.
