rekeying my locks..possible?

I don't know if my locks are jammed or what, but my keys wont turn the locks on my door. I just fixed my driver side door locking rod, but it's useless without being able to turn the key, so I'm guessing the locks may need to be rekeyed. It it possible to do this myself? Or should I just look for a junked cat with the keys and rip the door locks off and take the keys? I'd have to seperate keys for ignition and doors which would make a total of 4 keys for this ed car.

I think if you contact a ford/mercury dealer about it they might be able to order you a new key.

Well, I decided to stick a small screwdriver inside the hole that the arrow points to and the key turns. I guess it's just jammed, it only turns when the screw driver is in that hole though.

oops, it's the other hole, the larger one that would be on the top of the lock when it's installed.

update, it turns only when the key is inserted almost all the way it, I have to put it in then pull it out about 3mm for it to turn...

I never had door keys for my car, just the keyless entry, which means I'm SOL if my battery dies :p

lol, locks can freeze when the temp is around 70? It was like this when I first bought it...I just have to stick the key in a certain way, i marked it on my key...it works...just needs a little extra pressure to turn it.

ok heres a old trick if ur locks are frozen. get a lighter take the key u use to unlock the doors heat it up with the lighter then put it in the lock let it sit for a couple seconds then u should be able to turn it. make sure the key is in all the way. hope this does help.

It's 70 degrees where he lives.  They aren't frozen.  I was wrong.

well, right now it's 10F with a wind chill of around -5F.
The lock themselves have yet to freeze, but my doors themselves have frozen shut because we got some light snow...

First off like eric said, Lubricate!  I try to avoid WD-40 because it can get "gummy" with age, and locks tend to be a close tolerance thing...  Powdered graphite can cause some problems if you use too much / too often, or later use a liquid lubricant on it.  Some say use a silicon based lubricant.  I prefer a teflon based lubricant, or high quality gun oil/machine oil.

It's probably either dirty or has a bent piece.  If lubrication didn't take care of it, try blowing it out (compressed air or pressurized lube).  If that doesn't help at all, it's probably time to call the lockie or just replace door and ignition locks.

I can't remeber if Fords use Pin tumbler locks or Wafer tumbler locks, but I'm pretty sure it's a 10-disk wafer lock.  Anyway, call around to various local locksmiths to see if they do rekeying for fords, compare prices.  If you take both of the door locks out, and take them to the lockie's shop yourself and put them back in yourself, it'll be cheaper than if they have to: go out to your car, do all the disassembly, rekeying, and reassembly.  You'll also want to make sure they key it to the factory code, otherwise you'll have to carry 3 keys: door, ign, trunk.

Sorry this got so long, picking is a hobby of mine.
