Blew my engine today...

...in my tractor! It's an old Allis-Chalmers 16-horse hydrostatic. I was mowing the lawn and it just went "BANGITY-BANGBANGBANGBANG!". In the split second between when the noise started and when the engine stopped I knew exactly what the sound meant, and when I got off the tractor and looked my fears were verified: A fist-sized hole in the block and engine bits all over the lawn. !!!

So, anyone got a 16-horse cast iron Kohler lying around? :D

Do you want to put another kohler on there? I may be able to dig one up for you.

I'd reccommend going with a honda 20-24hp v-twin, we use these on the sawmills at work, they've been building mills since 79 and using honda engines for most of that time with no problems (had a mill in for repaif a few weeks ago, built 12 years ago, same engine still running strong, it was a 13hp single though)

i love them honda motors, they always start so nice, kohlers are good too, but i still think the hondas are better. the brigs motors always seem to brake, along with the tespoogesehs

I don't know what I'm gonna put in there. Whatever it is, it's gotta have a 1.25" output shaft to mount a magnetic clutch on (for the PTO), and a  on the other end of the crank to mount the hudrostatic transmission to. I'm gonna take a look at Princess Auto my next time in the city.

I would just get another tractor if this was just a lawn mower, but it's got snowblower and garden tiller attachments as well. Because of this I'd like to be able to save it. Even if I had to put a noisey ol' Briggs or Tespoogeseh in it (it's probably not worthy of a Honda).  tbirdscott - you really think you could come up with a 40-year-old Kohler? It doesn't have to be 16 horses - anywhere between 14-18 would likely do it...

I suppose I could always try to get that Ford V4 from the neighbour at the cottage and shoehorn that sucker in there :D

You could find a 3.8 or use the TC engine on there. Nothing better than the sound of an open header turbo 2.3.

I like that 2.3turbo on a lawn tractor, wonder if they would let you race it in one of those tractor races or they find it illegal or against the rules.

Kohler is a good motor nothing against it besides it might be a little expensive. Years ago when I did landscaping the scags and bobcats all came w/all sorts of motors Briggs Hondas Kawasaki’s ECT. When the motors went we always replaced them with Kawasaki’s they were the best bang for you buck cheapest and they took the abuse like the best of them. But that was 10 years ago I never asked why but you don’t see kali’s on machines like I used to.

I think the lawn tractor he was talking about was more along these lines.

I do have a 351, but it's bigger than the tractor. Come to think of it, it would be perfect :D

Dunno what I'm gonna do about this tractor, but I do know I've gotta get another one quickly. I only got the lawn about 1/4 mown, and it grows ed fast!!!
