Fuel Sending Unit Pieces

So I removed my old fuel sending unit and put in the new one. Now I have a new problem. The ends of my old fuel sending unit have these rubber stoppers that are what helps hold the fuel lines onto it. My new fuel sending unit does not have these.

I cant take the old ones off, and I need some advice on where to find these parts?

Well I had the same problem with my oil sending unit. The digital cluster and the standard ones have diffrent sending units. This may also be true between the 3.8's 2.3's and 5.0's. Chances are that they gave you the wrong peice. That is what happend to me. I would bring the old and the new one in. Show them the diffrence and see if they have any others for your model year in their system.

I just went up there, they said there isn't any other fuel sending unit listed for the car (and I didn't notice any others when I orderd it the first time)

I don't know what else to do tho, theres no other way of attaching the hoses, I don't understand how the fuel sending unit manufacturers assumed I could connect this..

:rolleyes: It was part of the connector for the fuel lines that was stuck to the fuel sending unit.. a little bit of work and I got it off, and popped it back in the connector, were all good now.

You're still not guaranteed to be out of the woods. There are indeed two sending units for these cars: One with the digital gauge and one with the buttstuffogue (By "Digital" I mean full digital. Base clusters have a digital speedo but an buttstuffogue fuel gauge). One has been discontinued, the other is still available. If memory serves me right it's the far more common "buttstuffogue" sender that has been discontinued. It seems backward to discontinue the more common style, but I think it may have something to do with the Mark VII - they used a different type of fuel gauge (whether buttstuffogue or digital) and it's likely the same sender as the full digital one in 85-88 Birds and Cats. Since the Mark wasn't discontinued until '92 there are likely still some parts lying around (of course, this is purely speculation).

The gist of it: If you have the base cluster you'll likely end up noticing that your fuel gauge reads backward...

If the guage works backwords, I can deal with it. I do indeed have the partialy digital cluster. Everything on this fuel sending unit looks the same (according to my dad who ended up installing it without me). Im sure it could have been different even if it didnt looks physically different.

The difference is in the resistor. One sender goes high resistance when empty, low resistance when full. The other is the opposite, and the two ranges are different as well.
 
If you replaced the sender because the old one rusted out, don't throw the old one away. If your wonky gauge bothers you, you can always swap your old resistor onto the new sender. Of course, if you installed the new one because the old one didn't work you're SOL :D
 
Of course, now you've got the most difficult part of a full digital swap done - now you can replace the oil and water senders, rewire the cluster connectors, and install a Star Wars dash :p

oh, and yeah, you'd most likely rather have the truen buttstuffogue gauges than the digital stuff anyway...i know i do!
