Got the t-bird appraised today

for insurance purposes. I'll have the report tomorrow or Monday.

Anyone else have their car appraised? Mind sharing the value? As long as I get enough to cover what I have invested I'll be happy.

You better be careful of the amount of that appraisal...

I may want more money... :D

I had the CJ appraised about a dozen years ago... Was $11,300... Hagarty has agreed to insure it for twice that amount with just sending them pictures...

Good luck with that! :)

Sure Tom, the tires on that car was worth almost what I paid for the car.

As long as you are happy, I'm tickled silly...

Hell I hope they insure it for twice what you paid...

I had the convertible appraised a year ago. I was happy with the result...essentially I have never lost one penny with that car. Every cent put into it has added to its value. My insurance agent simply modified my existing policy to reflect the verified value--it was much easier to do that, than try to reapply for another policy. I don't discuss the numbers with people but suffice to say, it's high for a Fox-body Cougar. ;)

I don't want it to come back too high. After all, the appraised value is what determines the cost for insurance.

Eric, I asked for numbers so I could get an idea what other cars in similar condition to mine are appraising for. I knew yours would appraise for much much much more than mine. :)

Yeah, it's pretty much considered a one-off so the value is skewed just a little bit. ;) I would think anything over $8-10K US is great though.

One gas-guzzler is enough, thanks. ;) Fortunately I don't drive much and only need to fill the Mountaineer once a month. And it's got a smaller tank than the Cougars, by 1 gallon. Makes it a little bit easier to keep the tank filled. Not! LOL.

Yeah, I was...if you get a quote halfway close to Tom's then I think you'll be very happy. I know his was a different car and all, but still...that's a good, solid number.

Basically the values on these cars bottomed out close to a decade ago. They have not risen in value because the supply is still meeting the demand, for the most part. Between 1983-88, there were over 600,000 Cougars and over 1.2 million Thunderbirds made. So over 1.8 million cars, figure if even half of them still exist today, then there are still a LOT of them out there changing hands. Only when you get to rare, low-production or in-demand models (XR7's, 1987 20th Anniversary, Turbo Coupes, etc.) will you typically see values go up--maybe a little, if you're lucky. It's good and it's bad: good, because you can get a really nice car for cheap. Bad, because it's not going to be worth much in the short term.

The only way I see overall values going up in the near future is if

a) people wreck them in unusually high numbers and use up all the crash parts
b) someone digs up a rare model we've never heard about before (unlikely at this point)
c) a major company starts reproducing parts for us, or
d) Chip Foose redesigns one for Overhaulin'.

Now d)....that one would have an enormous effect on our cars since he has the "magic touch". Because there are no parts catalogs for our cars, and one would be forced to be creative, Chip is about the only TV personality that could pull it off successfully. I can see him doing a two-tone T-Bird with a big ol' Ford crate 5.0 cammer engine and a gullwing door conversion. ;) I think if that were to happen, values would shoot up virtually overnight. Think about it: people see the show, search the web afterward, FIND US...all kinds of new members to the message board...I think we could handle that kind of fame, don't you? ;)

Now for individual cars, the better shape your car is in, the higher the value...plain and simple. Appraisers know if a car has been abused. If you have a clean car inside, out, underneath, and in the trunk, you have nothing to worry about. That's the beauty of an appraisal: the cleaner it is, the more your value goes up, and you actually can "beat the system" vs. the general values at the time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - if someone wants to nominate me, I'm game. The pictures are here. I can play dumb. Hey! Someone swipped my car! :D

Or maybe he can do my base model I'm getting this weekend. Oh! I forgot to tell you, my sister is finially giving me her 88 t-bird (see attached) that I've been after for years.

Hey, maybe he can do both! :D

I'm sure someone here can pull off a shaved two tone T-bird with custom billet wheels. Add a pinstripe, and you've got a Fooser.:tg:
