Farewell fuel pump, you've had a good run...

Well, after absolutely zero signs of problems...my fuel pump has taken the proverbial dirt nap.  Relay seems to be good, it's not the inertia switch...my fuel pump simply makes a clunk sound.  Naturally, it has to be when I have 3/4 of a tank of gas...I'm half temped to just cut a hole in my trunk...although not knowing exactly where the fuel pump is located on the tank, that could end up really bad.  Now my holiday weekend is being spent fixing this ...I wanted to get it ready for Atco on thursday night...but this has got me so flustered, I just don't even want to go now.

usually you can take a mallet and smack your tank to make them kick in.  we were always getting chevy pickups in for bad fuel pumps and in most cases thats what they needed.  might give it a try just dont dent your tank :hick:

Yeah, I already beat the piss out of the tank...did nothing.  I have a Walboro 190lph pump in my parts pile...I just got back from the store and bought some hi-press fuel hose and clamps as the ones currently on the car have probably seen better days...fun, fun.

If you're standing at the trunk of the car facing the front... and you can find the center of the tank on the top, it's exactly center and to the passenger side about... 6-8 inches. 

But I certainly wouldn't advise cutting the trunk with the gas tank up :D  There isn't a lot of room between the two.

Yeah, I figured I would just end up destroying something if I cut the floor.  It was pretty hairy getting it back up by myself, but I did it...now have a new Walboro 190lph pump slipped in there.  Upon removal of the pump and "cage"(as i call it), I found the cause of the failure...the strainer had fallen off and apparently slid around a little in the tank...had to go bobbing for it...lol.  I did notice that the car would die around turns for about the past 2 months if i had less than 1/2 tank.  I'm amazed it lasted that long.

So, I've come to find that an aftermarket fox mustang pump fills the bill quite nicely.  I had to trim out the bottom of the rubber pump holder to allow room for the significantly larger pickup.  The diameter of the pump was also smaller than that of the factory pump...a spare length of 5/16" hi-press fuel injection hose took care of that.  It's a very light modification to make it work...that Walboro sure is quiet too...I couldn't hear it turn on or run while the car was running...the stocker seemed like it used to scream compared to this thing.

go to harbor feight and buy a cheap $10 syphin(cant spell) pump and it will make the whole thing easier

Well, it has been loud since I got the car(screaming is an exaggeration to make a point)...I guess I didn't notice it get louder over time.  And yes, a syphon would have made my life so much easier...lol.  She's running pretty strong now.

Wait till you run your tank low with the new pump.......you'll hear it.  It has a nice little hum to it.

I'll have to listen for it...I thought the 190lph pump would be obnoxiously loud...lol.

My 255 is rather quiet as well.  It's actually quieter than the stock replace I had in there.

The 5.0/3.8 Birds generally have the large Bosch pump, while the TCs have the smaller 88lph Walbro with a thicker insulator and large pickup... The Stang replacement pumps fit those perfectly... Have a 190 in mine...

Not a fan of butchering the trunk, but if you looking in the trunk at the floor (mat up of-course) you should see a funny looking triangle raised up a little center/pass side. I’m pretty sure it’s under there. Last year after running an enduro I got cheap and cut through that and if I remember right the sending unit was there I took it out and took out the gas
