Glowing Exhaust Manifold

Hi, 
  I am a new member who owns 88 2.3 Ltr. 5 Speed TBird TC. I am having problems with Exhust Manifold Glows after driving a few miles. New Exhaut, CatCoverter,Plugs Wires, TFI, TPS ingniton sensor, heat sensor,Oxyen sensor,cleaned raditor, new coolant, an dwhole lot of other things I can't remember of the top of my head.  And still I am having the same problem. I have been dealing with this for 2 Years. My Son and I have tried everything we can think of. Oh thermostate, new raditor cap.
  Why is it getting so hot? I don't see anything leaking from raditor, or water pump. Could there be a blockage someplace? I would really appreciate any info that I can get. Thank you!

As far as I know, it's a pretty normal thing.  If you drive the car a few miles and really get into the boost, it's pretty common to have the exhaust manifold turn red.  Does the car exhibit any other symptoms? 

I know I've read a couple places that a red exhaust manifold is normal.  I know my on my '84 TurboCoupe, after a drive where I was really heavy into the boost, the manifold and part of the turbo housing would glow red. 

My only other thought is that MAYBE the car could be running too rich.  That will sometimes cause a red manifold, but I know it's sometimes normal in a turbo car.  Causes for running too rich could be a bad fuel pressure regulator.

I know that I have a bad heater core. As that was the first place water came out. Put in some stop leak, since have no water inside. I still smell coolant.
  I do have problems going up inclines. I have hardly any power, then when topped off she really goes, but bucks, like surging? maybe a miss?
    I am so afraid to dirve it for fear it will blow up or something. The temp gauge inside of car is normal, never above the half mark. I thought the RED HOT GLOWING was bad. Now this maybe normal. I know, it doesn't make sense to me.  I thought something might be clogged in exhaust system causing the problem.

From what you're saying about the bucking, that almost sounds like a bad TFI...was your replacement one of the cheap parts-store TFI's? I've heard most of them are junk and you really have to get a genuine Ford TFI.

Anyway I'm not sure about the glowing manifold but I would say that it is NOT normal unless you have been boosting the  out of the car for a long distance. Generally a glowing manifold is a sign of the car running either too rich or too lean...one of those two.

we had this problem with dads 83 TC and its not common to have a glowing manifold....  the problem was a broken distributor gear, you could literally grab the rotor and turn the whole shaft.  the problem is that its firing too late while the exhaust valve is open. check the distributor gear.

Are you sure the timing is set correctly?  How does the car run otherwise?  It's most likely not a cooling system issue.

It is possible that the ignition timing was set with the SPOUT connector connected, which would lead to very retarded ignition timing, which would in turn cause a glowing manifold under "normal" driving conditions.

Oh yeah, I forgot about timing. I bet that's it. That's probably why it doesn't have any power also.

No, I am not sure if timing has been set correctly. Apparently not by the sounds of thngs. Now that would be the ignition timing right? I will check the other things that were posted too!
  Someone made off with my Chilton's book, got different Chilton's not as good as the older one. So I am working with a handicap, if you know what I mean. Besides, I am trying to do the work myself, I am not mechanic by any means. Just need some guidence to get me though this project.
  I am looking into maybe selling car as I don't have the knowledge or know how when it comes to working on it. I think I took on a little to much when I bought the car 2 year's ago. I have spent a ton of money on repairs,almost as much as I bought the car for. That was $1600. She is the best handling and driving car I have ever owned. And a classy one at that. Now if I could get it up to running correctly, things would be different.

The timing should be set a 10* BTDC with the spout out. As for the manifold glowing it might be that you have a plugged up cat. I've read about that at http://www.turboford.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum
Also the cutting out could be the knock sensor cutting timing due to detonation.
