My New '86 GS

*EDIT- picking it up next weekend.:D

I'm looking into getting this '86 GS.

One of my dad's drivers is selling it. It has a freshly rebuilt (maybe a year ago) 5.0 with forged internals, new/rebuilt AOD, and ployurethane bushings. It was painted not too long ago but due to py paint work, it is peeling in some spots. The car doesn't have any rust on it though.

The guy was letting his daughter drive it when a couple weeks ago, he got a call from her that she wrecked it. She spun it in the rain and rammed the left rear tire into a curb. The only visable damage I can find from this incident is that the rear bumper is cracked and the left front fender has a light crease. There is no other body damage on the car. He said he thinks the rear is bent but I couldn't verify that today while looking. It was raining too hard to get on the ground and look but the rim is certainly going to need to be replaced (I'll probably throw turbines on it anyway).

Other stuff I've found on the outside is that both tailights have cracks and one headlight is cracked.

Now onto the interior. It is dirty but that was to be expected. The dash is also cracked but whos isn't. The stock wheel was replaced with an aftermarket one. The headliner is shredded and the drivers door armrest is falling off.

The car has manual door locks, manual crank windows, and a manual drivers side mirror. No passenger side mirror or rear defroster.

Under the hood is filthy, but that's no problem. The heater core has been capped and the ac is disconnected. The engine starts and idles beautifully but since he wasn't home when I looked at it, I couldn't test drive it. That and I'd have to bring a spare tire with me for the left rear that's busted.

So here's the deal, he wants $500 for the car. Actually he wants $500 for the engine and tranny. He said if I don't buy the car, he is going to sell the motor and tranny and junk the car. I'm teetering on the top of the fence and don't know which direction to go. While it is nice to save one of these cars from certain death, it also seems like it may need a little bit too much work. So what do you all think?

Wow...
That just amazes me. An '86 GS with crank windows, manual locks, no pass. mirror, no rear defroster, and a 5.0. Did the car come with a 5.0?
It may very well be worth restoring.

I actually do. I love my '88 to death despite the problems I've had with it and would gladly take another. I'm addicted to these cars now so...

If the rear is bad in this '86, this would give me a good opportunity to put a TC rear in the '88 (for better gears and disk brakes). I could swap the rear out of the '88 and put it in the '86.

Stole those words right out of my mouth...

If you pass, I'm sure a MD cougar guy would pick it up. Ahem, a certain someone in Westminster perhaps.  :giggle:

For $500 you can't go wrong. Hell if I could find a SEFI 5.0 car for $500 I'd buy it and I'd FIND some where to put it;)

Its a rebuild of the SO that was in it but with forged parts.
As far as pics of the damage, this was all I managed to get. I no sooner got to look at the car and it started raining very heavily.

It will need a new driver's front fender and a rear bumper but that's it as far as the body is concerned.

The left rear wheel is bent from the curb as well. The guy tells me there is rear diff damage but I didn't see any signs of it.

In simple words...DO IT!! I bought one, identical to it, but with electric everything, however I just sold it, that one is in better condition. I think its a hell of a buy. I like the look even with the NASCAR styel rims. I'd buy it.

Do you think this guy really has the time to fuss around with pulling the engine and trans then trying to get $500 for an SO 5.0?  Does he have access to highly traveled road frontage, free ad space, or people in the car repair business?

Or is he trying to find someone who will go through the effort of pulling an SO engine and trans then turn around and pay him $500 for doing none of the work?

Did he know you are a Cougar nut before you showed up?  I'm wondering if any of that is bluff.
