Stuck In Gear

I have a 1988 Cougar XR7 & I have a problem. My car is stuck in park & I've tried to find a gear shift cable (at least thats what the guy who works on it said is the problem).I can't find this part ANYWHERE.Has ANYONE been in this situation & how did you resolve it? Where did you find the piece (if that is the problem)?

Assuming that it's an automatic, it's probably the linkage binding up, or possibly a bolt not attached somewhere. Check the pic i've put up, the arrow at the top points to what you want to be looking for underneath the car. There is a bolt that attaches the two, the part that is directly connected to the trans should move freely back and forth when unbolted from the rest of the linkage. If not, then you have a problem with the transmission itself.
Temporarily Foxless? Ride the Bull...

Thanks !!!!!!

I appreciate that. I didn't think that it was a cable ( & Yeah,its an automatic).
