Distributor TFI socket disintegrated

I was replacing the TFI to fix a code 14. The rubber or plastic part of the PIP pick-up socket crumbled and fell apart.

Can the stuff on the top of the distributor shaft come off so I can drop the shaft out the bottom?

The drive gear is pressed on very tight. Getting it off and back on so the roll pin hole aligns back up looks like quite a challange.
I am tempted to just cut the wires and splice the socket off the new pick-up onto the old pick-up.

Any success stories and helpful techniques will be appriciated.

You need to pull the gear to do it properly.  Everything comes out the top after the gear is removed.

I pulled the gear with a claw type gear puller. Now the distributor is in the freezer for the night. Tomorrow I will try heating up the gear and hopefully it will slid on.

Let me know how it goes. I'm planning to put a PIP and TFI on my two cars as preventive maint. I'd rather not have to take the dist. to a machine shop so the gear can be pressed on/off.

I pulled the gear from my dist to replace the PIP in my '85.  Luckily I had an extra dist from my old '84 Cougar laying around.  I guess you can't pound directly on the end of the shaft to get it out of the dist housing...  I had to do that on account of all the gunked up oil stuck in there.

I pulled the Dizzy gear on my 2.3T an it was easy. Just remove the roll pin then mount the dizzy upsidedown in a vice with the jaws loose not rubbing the shaft with it resting on the gear. Then take a allen key the same size as the oil pump drive and gently drive the shaft out of the gear. I will tell you is shouldn't take a massive pounding to get it off or on. To remount is I just use a deepwell socket and tap on the topside of the Dizzy shaft. Also if you take your time and line up the roll pin hole then just drive it stright on. Works great for me.

on thing i dont think anyone mentioned,,,
The hole that the roll pin goes through and holds the drive gear on,,, The hole is not drilled dead center of the gear and dizzy shaft.  In other words, you can put the gear on 180deg out.

For the money time and effort it costs to get a pip and tfi modules you should look into getting a used msd pro billet, picked mine up for 150 shipped in mint condition.

I sat the gear on the end of a soldering iron until the oil started to smoke. It still didn't slide on with finger pressure. I handled it with an oven mitt. I had to tap it on using an extended socket. But it went on fairly easy. I didn't have to clamp in a vise or anything, just held it with my hands.
I did mark the shaft and gear so they went back the same way they came off.

The next issue is I broke the latch off the TFI cable connector. I tried to lift it to unlatch it. After it broke and I had it out where I could see it. it says "push" on it.
I guess I'll try to get some cable ties around it.

If all you did was break the tabs off of the TFI wire plug, I wouldn't worry too much, the rubber seals in mine proved to be enough to hold the plug in.  But you can still do the cable ties for extra peace of mind.
