cooling issue.

ok I was setting the timing and making sure everything is firing right and all on the 5.0 that just went in the car. anyway in just a couple minutes or so the water outlet the upper radiator hose hooks to on the motor was hot enough I near burned myself.
Is this normal for these motors after theyve set for a bit?
I checked the coolant in the radiator its fine. i found out the oil was almost like water so it got changed that may have been alot of the problem...... also I had a fusible link blown to the alt that seemed to have made a world of difference in everything when I changed it...
Could that run a sensor or something that would cause the engine to heat up that fast? I noticed there was a sound of crackling metal right after shutting it down and since the link got changed it doesnt do that anymore.
Could that have been it?

Oil being like water,may be a head gasket problem.
Not at all common on a an N/A 5.0L but not impossible.
Check your oil again and see if there's any trace of further watering.

thin oil would have me bothered ,, could be worn rings

the fuseable link is usually a smaller guage wire spliced in and acts as a fuse. you may have blown that one yourself during wiring. If one of those at the alt blows,, it takes a lot of over current to do it.

i cant imagine what would make your upper rad hose heat up that hot within a couple minutes., i have no idea

crackling metal,, not sure either., could be a number of things like the headers , brackets, intake or whatever expanding due to the heat.

check your compression on the cylinders, you dont want gas in your oil.

do you have a temp gauge on it? if so how hot is hot? most stock 5.0's run at 190-195* sometimes creeping 200* at a light.

What fan are you using?,what mix of coolant? lower hose not collapsing? etc

dominator.....It could be possible it's a head gasket the engine doesn't smoke like there's anything going into the cylinder so If it is leaking it would be going into the oil pan. This engine supposedly only had like 75 K miles on it though so it shouldn't be in to bad of shape unless setting for awhile did it. The problem there is the radiator had antifreeze in it and when I drained the oil there was no trace of coolant in the oil.
It looked like normal dirty oil that should have been changed about 60 K miles ago. Normally you can see the oil and water seperate correct? this was solid stuff just not as thick as normal oil.

jcassity... It could be rings as well but the engine still acts like it has plenty of compression to it. The fusible link I may have broke when I was rewiring not sure it was pretty worn from before and needed replaced anyway. As far as the crackling its quit doing that I'm wondering if it may have just been the parts from not being used for awhile I know the engine seems to be running cooler now though since I got it hooked back up.

sleeper t-bird 87 the temp guage is stock and it never went above the spot it always did it seems to bottom out alot further then what it used to though Im not sure whats up with that its the same sensor that was in the V6 I had in it.
The fan is an electric fan I took off a parts car a buddy had I can't remember what car it was it has a descent amount of flow to it though.
The coolant mix is a little less then half and half it has a little more water in it then it does antifreeze considering the lowest its been out lately is around 65 that SHOULDN'T be an issue although it might be.
On the hoses, none of them seem to be collapsing, the only thing Im not sure of is the position of the little hoses to the waterpump and such. Could it be possible they're hooked up wrong causing the excess heat in the engine?
