im sorry it looks too much like a mustang.....ever since 99 i havnt really cared for the mustang.... newest stang id buy is a 95 with 5.0 but i have seen a few 99+ id like. personally the ONLY retro id be going for right now is the challenger as i beleive dodge did a great job with it... the camaro concepts i beleive look like and the mustang... well let flaming begin but i just think they look horrible. i know others feel differently but hey we all have opinions.. same goes wtih that thunderbird retro. also i beleive cougar NEVER should have be fwd.

The Mustang is going to need to get a new source of power if Dodge and GM go ahead with those numbers...both are N/A. What oriface did you pull those numbers out of? The Challenger, if it makes production, will very likely feature a 3.5 V6 in the neighbourhood of 250 horses (the Mustang should have the 3.5 Duratec by then). An R/T version would likely have the same 345 horse Hemi as found in the 300/Charger/Magnum. Do you really think DC would make a V6 model and then jummp right into the big Hemi? The 425-horse Hemi will likely end up as an SRT package, which, by my estimation, would make it a "Special" model, just like the GT500.

As for the Camaro, yes, it likely will have an LS2 as the Z28 model, and it might even have an LS7 in a "special" model to compete with the Mustang, but that is several years off, if it even happens. Ford has plenty of time to up the ante, and it has all kinds of ammunition that it chooses not to use right now, because it doesn't have to (Boss 330, 5.0 cammer, etc). The first 5.0 Mustang had 130 horsepower, fer chrissake.

And you are failing to mention a major problem with both the Challenger and the Camaro - right now, their projected weights are over 4000 pounds. They are based on very heavy, very complicated platforms (especially the Dodge). For could easily get away with a 50-horse deficit and still keep up with the others, much like it kept up with (if not flat outran) the GTO before the LS2 was dropped in).

Do you really think that when the Mustang has to face competition it will rest on its laurels? Oh, wait, it's Ford we're talking about. Rest they will...

I love that cougar god, the debt id go into, FORD NEEDS TO MAKE THIS or mercury will go the way of oldsmobile. Oh and about the camaro and challenger, Firstly i like the challenger but there is just one problem, its dodge. Secondly no matter how you look at the new camaro it looks like shiznite i dont care how many people "love'' the thing it still looks ass.

Last I heard the Challenger will be in low production using the 425-horse Hemi, not the standard 345-horse. I haven't heard anything about them making a v-6 model.

If Chrysler was smart, they would offer the Challenger in all the varieties with the v-6, 345- Hemi, and 425- Hemi.
That will certainly put it on a similar level to the Mustang.

However, much as Jim posted, both Chrysler and GM's offerings are bound to be much more expensive than the stang.

The Challenger, if low production will most likely be V8 only...but the demand might be high enough to have a high production run of V6 econo cars and V8 hot rods. Roughly 50,000 units per year is the latest I've heard. A 6.1L Hemi is almost a given. If they decide to change to a low production run then the 5.7L will replace the V6. They still aren't 100% on what the game plan is. They might even do an introductory run of only 6.1L to see how high demand is and then use the 5.7L in the following years.

Mopar still has a 510 hp 6.4L up its sleeve. So there is your answer to an SRT-8 Challenger. The way things are RIGHT NOW, the Mustang is going to look like the pony it's named after. I'd love to see a 400 hp N/A Mustang from the factory. Even having 500 hp, the GT500 doesn't appeal to me because of the SC. If you need a SC to create a distinct "supercar", something is wrong...to me anyway. Why not offer a 5.4L and then have a SC version for the high rollers? And why is it Ford is the only contender not in the 6 liter range? I'm just not understanding where they are trying to go in the new muscle car war.

All that aside....the new Cougar would only come about after the muscle car war hits us full force. But once, like the day, if not the hour, the new Cougar is annouced as official...I'm heading to a dealer to put my name on the list.

The heavy challenger is rated at low 13 sec times with the 425hp hemi...according to chrysler...that's not too impressive because a new mustang GT with 300hp and an AUTO trans can run mid 13's. Last time I looked ford has rated the GT500 at 475 hp and it's been that way for quite a number of months.

Q: What has Ford always been good at with their V-8 performance cars?

A: Low-end torque

A 500hp naturally aspirated 5.4 is quite possible...if you want peak torque to occur after 5,000rpm. The reason for the s/c 5.4 is to maintain gobs of low end torque and it makes it easier to pass emissions than some wild high compression, radical cammed N/A motor. I believe that we will see the base GT get some power increases as soon as it has an adequate challenger(pun intended

).

As for the new coug concept...F'ING SCHWEEEET!

YOUR ARE AWESOME!!! you're the first person to agree with me on the new Stangs and Camaros. I hate them so much. But this Cougar takes the cake on the so called "retro-styling" they are trying to achieve.

The standard Challenger is supposed to be a v6 and the R/T comes with the 425 Hemi. What I have heard.

Ok, so even if the Challenger does end up as a low production 425-horse Hemi only model, doesn't "Low production" kind of put it in the same boat as the Mustang Shelby GT500? And "Low production" would CERTAINLY crank the window sticker up significantly. Those machines that build the cars don't pay for themselves by making low production AND cheap cars...

Precisely.
That's why I said if they were smart and really wanted to compete with Ford, they will need to produce the Challenger in three different flavors at competitive prices. Thats very doubtful though.

being on this forum i've noticed a lot of "power hungry" people...... gotta have a lower et or more horsepower...... i'm all about the look... that's why i have a 4 eyed cougar, i love the front, the (i call it) tear-drop rear windows, and flat back..... it bothers me that i own an 8 cylinder with less hp than my kia, but my cougar LOOKS good!....... i couldn't care less if they put a 4cyl in that new cougar.... IT LOOKS HOT!!!!!!!.... and that's all that matters to me :)..... it has everything i love about the 69 cougar eliminator i adore (the rear lights, the flip front lights:bowdown: and the attitude........... if i have to buy a mustang and fabricate a new rear and front header myself i'm doing it!!!! i'm saving that pic and if ford is stupid enough not to make this car (which i wouldn't put it past them), i'm going to retrofit a mustang so i can still have one:idhitit:

Ditto to that. Thats what I wanna do in Body school next year. Its a bad ass car. The power hungry is, people like looks, dont get me wrong, but to car guys there is nothing better than a throaty V8. There's no replacement for displacement. I love my Cougar too, but I NEED POWER!!

True enough, there are plenty of power hungry people in the Mustang's target market, but the fact that you can still buy a Mustang while the much more powerful F-bodies withered away prove that power ain't everything. The problem Ford has with the upcoming Camaro and Challenger is that they look every bit as good, if not better, than the Mustang, so the aesthetic advantage will be lost.

The Shelby numbers are as follows:

500 HP @ 6000 RPM 480 LB-FT @ 4500 RPM

As for the Challenger, there are reports stating as low as 10,000 units and up to of 50,000 units per year. If they do go with 50,000 they may put the v6 in some of those.
