My ‘new’ 86 bird… Pics
I just got back from CA. I washed all the bugs off the front and took a few pictures. For those that don’t know this did belong to "Johns331". I drove it from CA back to TX and it didn’t miss a beat. I didn’t have to deal with any of the dreaded 3 T’s: tickets, tow trucks or tools… so it was a good trip! So enough about that and on to the car...
The car is awesome. It’s very fast. It actually feels noticeably stronger than the 03 Mach 1 that I test drove a while back so I’m thinking mid to low 13’s. I got it up to 130 mph in the desert at only 4000 rpm and it was still accelerating. I backed off because of lack of a front air dam and rear spoiler. I didnt want to risk the consequences of no downforce and air flow under the car. Lift at those speeds is dangerous. The car was rock steady though and it probably would have done somewhere in the neighborhood of 140 to 150 mph. The suspension is basically Maximum Motorsports “grip in a box” with coilovers and yellow Koni DA’s minus the torque arm (…and I have a feeling there is one in this cars future). The engine is the SVO cobra short block (302) with aluminum GT-40 heads and a “mystery” cam. I suspect it has the B303 cam because that block came with a choice of an E or B cam. It’s got a T-5 and 3:55 geared 8.8 rear from a Mustang.
So how does it drive? The handling and steering is razor sharp. This car goes where you point it with out delay and the cobra brakes haul this thing down in a hurry. It pulls hard from 3000 rpm to around 5500. This is where I think the power starts to fall off due to the cam, intake (ported HO intake) and 19# injectors.
There is some minor detail work that needs to be done but other than that this is like a new car. By the way, there is only 44,000 original miles on the odometer and John was the original owner:D
