3000th post wasted on stupid questions and inane rambling..

..in other words, same as the other 2999 posts. :flip: :giggle:

Got my 3G swap done in the '89 Mark done today. Bought the PA Performance 95A unit for '86-93 Mustangs. Got the 1G hookup kit since the Mark 100A alts were externally regulated, and only had to cut one wire to hook everything up. Got their standard 4 ga. long wire kit to hook directly from the alt to the solenoid.. comes with a 200A inline fuse. (wonder if they messed up.. they usually specify a 150A fuse for use with a 95A) PA Performance was great, even though they forgot to include some parts like the upper mounting bolt. No big deal, I picked up some 10.9 metric bolts from the hardware store today. Also picked up a new battery, free of charge thanks to Wally-World's free replacement. The results? In idle, in park.. high beams on, all interior lights (and the Mark has tons of 'em) on, A/C on max, stereo on: 12.5-13v.

Had to pull the airbox out to clean out some junk and run the new wire underneath it. While it was out, I decided to deal with one of the mounts I had broken some time ago.. so I'm leaving it out until morning to deal with it. (ran outta daylight) It got me thinking about a couple things, though. One is making a do-it-yourself cold air kit, instructions found in the tech section of Lincolns Online:

Here come the stupid questions: Have any of you had experience with AEM air filters like this one?

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=AVM%2D21%2D203DK&N=4294925239+4294925170+4294925169+4294908390+400407+115&autoview=sku

If so, do you feel it did a good job? I'm considering that on the end of this DIY CAI, because I don't know if I wanna mess around with oiling some of the other filters out there. (and K&Ns are just WAY too expensive) I'd probably go with just a cheap AutoZone one otherwise, for now, if I don't get any feedback on the AEM one.

Second.. I've had sort of a stupid idea, and I'm wondering if anyone sees any significant logic flaws in it. I thought about finding someone with a louver punch (like on Crystal's hood) and having them punch 3 or 4 hole-facing-forward louvers into the upper front sides of the quarter panel right about where the air filter would be behind.. think of shark gills, but facing the other way. The point would be to pull in some cold air.. but I'd be concerned about getting a lot of water in there when it rains. Anyone think that would be a problem? Would it be bad to potentially expose the filter directly to water every time it's driven in the rain? Or think it would just look entirely too retarded? (they wouldn't be any larger than the height of my marker lights) I have a couple other ideas brewing for unorthodox cold air/ram air-type setups.. but I'll save those for another day.

I don't know.. I might just chicken out on this and pick up a cold air intake from eBay. Something like $24 plus $20 shipping, just need to find an adapter to eliminate the MAF.

Oh yeah, while I'm at it: Bypassed the smog pump entirely with a serp. belt from a '94 Caddy.. heh. Works great. I'll put up details if anyone else wants to try it. Costs ya $31 from AutoHole, if you go with the Goodyear belt. Probably crawl under there tomorrow and eliminate the smog pump entirely. Right now it's just in there in case I couldn't get the belt I needed to do the new routing.

Well, enough silliness for one post.

That may be a little dicey. It's kind of a cool idea, though.
The air silencer on my '96 4.6 had a faulty design. There was a way for water to drip directly into the tube and collect at the bottom. Ford put a small drain there, but it's easily clogged.
Long story short, it used to get the air filter a little wet when it was raining. The car would run like absolute poop... almost as if it was out of gas.
I think it screwed with the MAF as well.

I ended up ripping the whole thing outta there. Problem solved.

I am intrested in this i think it sounds cool but there is the problem of getting the air filter wet.

the fender well already gets alot or air in most cars. you probably shouldn't even need that. though it "might" look cool depending
