I wet my pants in the Cougar!

Seriously!:giggle:

Its raining like mad today (flooding, in fact) and my driver's door dropped water out at speed. And you can't slow down on the highway unless you wanna get rear ended. :) To keep it from possibly hitting my JL Audio door speaker or new carpet I stuck my leg out to soak it up.

The door weatherstrip around the A-pillar is toast. dried out, broken, you name it.

I have no clue if a suitable replacement is available outside of a junkyard....any advice?

Mine does that... it sucks, good thing it hardly rains here.  The only time I ever really encounter it is when I wash the car.  The py thing about going to junkyards for wheatherstripping, is that it's already going to be as old as yours, and it could just as likely be damaged as well.  All of the stuff here in AZ is sun baked and just falls apart.

Mine leaks a bit at the top when I wash it, but rain doesn't get in...yet.
Myself, I'd like to find both sides of the stuff that's good on the bottom, mine is torn/ripped some, and dust gets in through it...

 that sucks, theres got to be a source for weather stripping somewhere. I need rear window weather stripping, but have not been able to find it. Anyway fox mustang stripping could be adapted.

That is one of the good things about owning a popular car such as the fox stang, the aftermarket has stepped up to bring us needed parts that you cant get anywhere, and unfortunately the junk yard is only good for certain things.

Eric did a little trick at Cat Jam for me a couple years ago that took care of it for a while.  It's back, but I probably need to do it again...

Basically he says that the doors in these cars try and go 'straight' so what he did was roll down the window, put his knee at the bottom of the door (inside), grabbed the top of the door and bend it down towards the inside of the car.

It did take care of my problem for a while, so I really need to do it again.

But again, it isn't really a replacement for bad weather stripping.

The reason they go straight is because of people constantly pulling them open and grabbing at them by the top of the window frame.

Thanks guys. Now that I think about it, I vaguely remember Lincoln Mark VIIs having better weatherstripping in that area.  Just to be clear, I'm talking about the part that clips to the door near the a-pillar, not the rubber on the body that seals to the door. 

I'm gonna snag some Mark seals, if possible. If anyone else has quicker junkyard access than I do, take a looksy for me, please???

No wonder new cars don't have these aircraft style doors, they need more stuff to seal properly!

Be careful with removing that weatherstripping, Jeeves. It clips in, but the whole thing is a metal base that very easily distorts if you're not paying attention. I haven't found that stuff in NOS for quite awhile so you will have to snag some from another car. The Mark VII part *should* be the same as what we had. If not, let us know...that would be a worthy upgrade.

And BTW...I have a Cougar with an ill-fitting Buick Riviera convertible top grafted on. There will be no more complaints about water dripping into the interior unless you have my permission. ;)

Have yall tried J.C. Whitney? they would possibly have the weather stripping for our cars.  Just my guess

JCW does have some universal stuff that can be used as dew wipes on 1983-86 cars. I haven't experimented with universal door seals...it may be possible they have something that works. But for the part Jeeves is talking about, I haven't seen that there, nor have I seen anything that would work for 1987-88 cars. Still, JCW is at least providing something that works, which is more than can be said for anyone else.

 I saw NOS weatherstripping for 87-88 cars on Ebay about a month ago. I should have bought it. Mine don't leak yet but still at some point they will......

He's talking about that little plastic strip that attaches to the door in the A-pillar area right?  Mine is all smashed up too. But my door leaks more at the top then there, so I don't think that has anything to do with it.

LOL! Nice, Jeeves. :)

Seriously, those A-pillar pieces got replaced on the convertible 5 years ago. I bought the only NOS pair I've ever seen. When we removed the old ones they got REALLY bent up easily. IIRC you have to open the door (duh) and pull the piece toward you. There are 3 or 4 clips on the back.
