Removing the pan?

Iam sure it easy in the day light but i got a wild hair and decided to do this at 4am lol any how i am not quite sure how to pull it off. if i go forward the exhaust system is in the way and its old so I am not looking to cut bolts or even try to remove it. backwards the trany mount is in the way. I thought about moving it to the to the left side but i am not sure if i took the shifter cable off if it would mess with it. is there an easy way to do this with out having to move anything else out of the way?

don't think the pan is stock either, but not sure. it has yellow writing on it.

As per Chilton's:

Quote
5.0L Engine

1983-88 VEHICLES

  WARNING

On vehicles equipped with a dual sump oil pan, both drain plugs must be removed to thoroughly drain the crankcase. When raising the engine for oil pan removal clearance, drain the cooling system, disconnect the hoses, check the fan-to-radiator clearance when jacking. Remove the radiator if clearance is inadequate.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the oil level indicator from the left side of the cylinder block.

Remove the air cleaner tube assembly.

Remove the fan shroud retaining bolts, then position the shroud over the fan.

Raise and safely support the vehicle. Properly drain the engine oil.

Remove the starter motor retaining bolts and electrical connections, then remove the starter from the vehicle.

Remove the exhaust catalyst converter and ler inlet pipes.

Unfasten the engine mount-to-no. 2 crossmember attaching bolts or nuts. Remove the no. 3 crossmember and the rear insulator support assemblies.

Remove the steering gear attaching bolts, then position the gear forward, out of the way.

Raise and safely support the engine in a position which allows for oil pan removal.

Remove the oil pan attaching bolts and lower the oil pan on the frame, remove the oil pan from the vehicle.

To install:

Clean the gasket mounting surfaces thoroughly. Coat the gasket mating surfaces on the block and pan with sealer. Position the pan gaskets and/or seals.

Install the oil pan, then tighten the retaining bolts to 6-9 ft. lbs. (9-12 Nm).

Lower the engine onto the engine insulators, then install the engine mount-to-no. 2 crossmember attaching bolts or nuts. Tighten to 33-45 ft. lbs. (45-61 Nm).

Position the steering gear on the main crossmember. Install the two attaching bolts and tighten them to specification.

Install the starter motor and attach the electrical connections.

If equipped, connect the transmission oil cooler lines.

Install the rear insulator and the no. 3 crossmember.

Install the exhaust catalyst converter and the ler inlet pipes.

Partially lower the vehicle.

Position the fan shroud in place, then secure with the attaching screws.

Install the oil level dipstick and tube assembly. Fill crankcase with the proper type and amount of engine oil.

Install the air cleaner assembly.

Connect the negative battery cable.

Apply the parking brake and while holding a foot on the brake, start the engine and allow to run for a few minutes. Turn the engine OFF and check for oil leaks.

Why did I think he was talking about the transmission pan and not the base pan? Maybe it was because he said "i go forward the exhaust system is in the way"

That threw me too, but I've always been able to slide the tranny pan out on AOD's with stock exhaust.....My current exhaust takes a little finesse but the pan comes out.

what i do is crack all the bolts loose, sometimes you have to tap the side of the pan with a rubber hammer to knock it free. then loosen the front ones more than the back allowing the fluid to drain out into a pan.  after its mostly all out take the rest of the bolts and and the pan slides rite off. i think the filter is held on with like 3? bolts. why are you dropping the pan anyway?
