Anyone Want to sell me a Compressor? April 22, 2006, 09:31:03 PM Ok, I've decided to post this, as embarrassing as it may sound, because frankly I don't know what to do anymore. I live in Tucson, Arizona and keep in mind the temps have only gotten up to about 90F so far....no where near the peak of 110+ in Summer. Everytime I run the Air Conditioning, the engine wants to out. Not only is a ton of power sucked out it, but when I'm sitting at intersections, I'm constantly paranoid because on several occassions, the engine shudders and then dies out. I can see the RPM's drop, go up, drop even more, and then the car dies. This of course presents a problem when you have to get to work on time, and there are other impatient drivers behind you. After about 10-15 minutes of driving, the engine wanting to out problem usually goes away. However, this is where the other problem occurs. The temp guage almost always goes up right to the White Line separating "Norm" from "Hot". Now, believe me, I understand having a 4 banger that running the Air is going to suck the power out of the engine. I even somewhat understand the heating. But you can't tell me the engine sputtering out and dying is normal.The only thing I can think of is the compressor is going bad. When I figured out the wiring problems a few months ago and got it to engage, it sounded rather loud and made a constant clicking noise while running. To this day, when I run the compressor, it is still rather loud (compared to what I believe other compressors sound like on other cars.) and makes that clicking noise. I don't know if this means it's bad and is dragging the engine down with it, or what. The car runs fine with the Air off, but living in the Desert, I simply cannot go without it. But, I can't help but think I could easily solve this problem. To be honest, I wouldn't even be considering selling this car if I could solve this air conditioning problem. No, I haven't checked the codes because I don't own a reader. And every Autozone/Checker simply refuses to check them for me. So, I am asking for opinions on what this problem could be. Again, saying that the car dying out with the air on is a normal thing just can't be right. I mean, it was designed to run with the Air on, and dying out just cannot be "normal". Maybe I need a new compressor, but I don't want to go and get one only to have the same problems. Any Ideas? Quote Selected

What he found was the following:Pip Circuit FailorsThrottle Positioning Sensor Out Range during test.That was it. However, what's more important was that this morning while driving I turned the Air on and to my dismay, hot air came out. When I pulled along side another car, I could hear a loud squealing noise. I returned home, poped the hood and saw the compressor struggling to move. It finally bit the dust. I figured that clicking noise it was making couldn't be good, but today, it finally caught up with me. So, now I am in the market for a new Compressor. I tried Autozone and Checker but both of them didn't carry the part. Anyone know where I can find a compressor at the lowest possible price? Quote Selected
Anyone Want to sell me a Compressor? Reply #5 – April 30, 2006, 04:48:03 PM The '86-'88 TCs use a HR980 compressor(dunno who the mfg'r is)... But guess what??? They are long since obsolete and are NOT rebuildable... You'll need to get a used one... Or there are some expensive conversions that mounts a different compressor... Only good news is the 2.3 Stang used the same one thru 91 or so... Quote Selected

But a simple phone call can find you the answer. I found the compressor/clutch available at other places. Advance looks like they sell a compressor conversion (as TurboCoupe50 referenced) kit. Reply #14 – May 01, 2006, 02:44:57 PM Have you verified whether it is the compressor or the clutch (or both) that has gone bad?Engine lugging could be a bad compressor...it could also mean a restriction on the high side. Loosen the belt and with the key on, A/C on (this will engage the clutch) - try to spin the compressor with your hand. If it won't spin...your compressor is most likely toast.Keep in mind, if your compressor died and shat itself all over the rest of your A/C system...putting another compressor on without a thorough flushing will probably lead to disaster.Also, using R-134a in HR980 compressors is not a good thing. The Viton seals react with the 134a and bad things happen. Quote Selected
