fuel problem

ok everyone Im not sure this goes here so if not someone please move it to the right place.  My dad has a 86 mercury sable and the fuel pump isnt pumping fuel. They replaced the pump but no go it still isnt pumping. My first thought is its something electrical causing it like a relay or something. They said the car was just going down the road and it was like someone turned the key off and then back on. They did get the fuel pump to kick on once since they replaced it but only for a second and not long enough to build any pressure what so ever. Ive never had a problem like this in my bird other then when the little rubber line inside the fuel tank rotted out recently. That has been replaced when the new pump was put in. Being an 86 I wouldnt think the fuel system would be any different then our cars other then maybe the length of the wires. Any ideas on it? Im thinking its not getting power to the pump. Also if this sounds like a relay problem any chance anyone knows where its at in these cars?

yeah, otherwise it wouldnt turn on. Check the kill switch on the passenger side of the trunk. You know, the gas cut off. It is more then likely the culprit.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Look under the hood, somewhere, see if there's a fuse box with the big fuses, one went bad on my truck once, wouldn't let it get fuel...

well, then, I'd say check the fuel pump electrical connector, and test it with a test light, or volt meter, and then check the wiring back to the eec...i know it's pita, but something's not sending juice somewhere...
Might try looking up a wiring diagram, as well.

thats pretty much what I told them. They have some kind of idea about just hooking the fuel pump up directly to the ignition switch which I think is kind of stupid but its not my car so if they break it then its on them.

The box you see when you take off the plastic shield, the one mounted
directly under the plastic shield, is the module. In it is housed the fuel
pump relay, eec relay, cooling fan high and low relays.
