Wipers not parking

When I bought the car from Tom, he told me there was a problem with the wipers and that he had unpluged the wiper motor. When I got the car last fall I plug in the wiper motor and noticed the problem. I unplugged the motor again and took a mental note to change the motor.

The problem now is I can't remember what was wrong. Tom, can you remember?

So, today I changed the motor and I noticed that the wipers would not park. Maybe that was the problem??? Anyway, with the wipers not parking I decided to change the govenor - same problem. So I changed the switch - same thing, wipers wont park.

The mistake I made was not pluggin in the old motor and confirming what the original problem was.

Maybe I should get the govenor out of the sport and try that. I could start up the sport and confirm that the wipers are working before I start taking out the parts.

Any ideas if I'm on the right track or anythng else I should try?

BTW: everything else about the wipers are working fine; the delay, low, and high speeds and the washer.

Thanks! I've seen that but I just read the first and last paragraph and missed the stuff in the middle. After you pointed it out to me, I read the whole page. :(

I have the battery charger on the sport right now and in an hour or so I'll try its wipers. If they work properly, I'll start swapping known good parts into the TC, starting with the motor since it's the easiest to swap.

I hope it is the motor. I don't want to drop the colunm in the sport yet. I still want to be able to drive it around. I haven't decided what I want to do with it yet.

Thanks again.

OK! I went and tested the wipers on my sport and they worked perfect. So, I took the motor and put it in the TC....same problem - wipers wouldn't park :screwy:

I could hear the same noise coming from the replaced governor as before when I turned off the wiper switch.

I took off the wiper arms to ease the strain of the dry wipers over the window.

I took the governor apart just to see what was going on inside. Everything looked find so I hooked it up in the car out of it's black box. Turned on and off the wipers and same problem. I turned on and off the wipers again and one of the relays flashed (spark) and the  wipers parked :screwy:

So then I unpluged the replacement governor and switch and hooked pack up the originals - Just to see if the flash in the relay had anything to do with the wipers parking. I tried the wipers again and they parked perfectly. I replaced the wiper arms and they still worked perfect. :screwy:

I don't know! At least it's fixed. :)

I had the same problem when I bought my '88 XR7. I took apart the "park mechanism" and cleaned all of the contacts. They were pretty corroded.
They parked from that point on.

Ditto, the Special did the same thing when I got it.  In the sixth month time that I drove it that way, I think they parked like 3 times.  After cleaning the contacts it hasn't malfunctioned once.
