Side motion in rearend April 14, 2006, 12:18:21 AM Finally figured out what was making the clunking noise in the rearend on my 88 tbird today.I grabbed onto the rear tire, either one ane it will move in and out a inch or more and make a clunking noise when doing this.Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix it. Side motion in rearend Reply #1 – April 14, 2006, 09:36:23 AM Do you mean the entire rear end shifts back and forth under the car? Welcome to 20 year old Fox rear suspension bushings. New control arm bushings or aftermarket control arms is the only route to "fix" it. There is always a little lateral movement in the rear suspension on the Fox cars. The splayed upper links only do so much to hold it in place. Some sort of lateral link (panhard bar, Watts link, etc) is the only sure way to locate the axle, BUT I'm guessing bushings/control arms are about all you'll need. Quote Selected
Side motion in rearend Reply #2 – April 14, 2006, 11:33:36 AM Unless you mean the axles slide in and out of the housing, in which case you've got some very worn parts inside.. Quote Selected
Side motion in rearend Reply #3 – April 14, 2006, 11:36:44 AM If the axles are moving in and out of the axle housing 1"+...there are SERIOUS problems and they should be separating themsleves from the housing soon..... Quote Selected
Side motion in rearend Reply #4 – April 14, 2006, 12:29:00 PM On my car they move in and out about 1/2 inch. In certian manuvers(sp?) it will "clunk-clunk-clunk" I've been told it does this when the traction lock is worn out. And mine is very worn out. Quote Selected
