What do I need for 300 HP?

I have an 87 T-Bird Sport with 150,000 miles.  I bought it in '91 as my first car at 75,000 miles and the only mod. is Flow-Tech shorty headers, dual exhaust, and 16" wheels/tires.  I want it to be a fun, reliable summer daily driver.  What will it take to get approx. 300 NA flywheel HP?  Will I need to convert to mass air?  Will GT40P heads work with the headers (spark plug clearance)?  What needs to be done to the lower end to handle 300 HP (rebuild or new short-block)?  Any suggestions on finding a shop in my area that will do such rebuild/modifications?  I've been researching on the web, but I have a lot of questions (obviously).  I'm interested in new parts or junk yard/used parts as long as they're usually reliable.  What would you estimate 0 to 60 time to be?  Thanks in advance for your advice!  BTW - great web site and Cool Cats too!

H.O conversion will be a big step in the right direction. a mild camshaft ,a good fuel pump and the typical mustang bolt ons will take you along way towards your goal.

I've had my eye on the Trick Flow top-end kit, but is that overkill to get 300?  Would there be piston to valve clearance issues with that kit and stock pistons?

Sounds like a good plan... i would always check piston to valve clearance.. no big deal to knotch the pistons with the right tools.

I do belive that paul has that same kit. I also think that turbocoupe50 says trick flow heads clear stock pistons.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

yeah...sounds like a solid kit. 300HP is pretty easy these days with the typical bolt ons.

So if I go with the Trick Flow kit, should I do the mass air conversion?  I guess if it will help mpg and performance with the HO computer I might as well with the cost of gas these days. :flame:  (that's us getting torched by high gas prices!)

with that cam you'll need mass air, and a HO computer. probley even go with 24# injectors and matching maf

If I have the engine rebuilt, should I get new crank, rods, and/or pistons?  The engine has 150,000 miles on it.

Unless they are in really bad shape you can definately salvage the crank and rods and have them machined. I had a crank machined down a few months ago for $140 canadian and thats way cheaper than new. As far as the rods go ford small block rods are as tough as any stock rod out there and can be machined to like new condition, i would recommend ARP bolts for the rod caps though. Pistons... I myself would probably replace especially if you are staying stock as they are not that expensive.

Yes, I have the Trick Flow package with the stage 1 cam.  My current pistons are forged flattops (don't ask....I've checked they ARE forged)  This setup will clear.

Some extra parts you will need are:
- Larger Fuel pump (at least 155 LPH)
- Parts for a Mass Air Conversion (the TFS cam simply does not have enough vacuum for a Speed Density setup to have a good idle)
- An adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
- A larger Throttle body (65 mm  or 70 mm  will do nicely)

Also on a side note most people run 24 pound injectors on this setup with stock or near stock fuel pressure.
I actually use 19's with the fuel pressure cranked to 62 PSI.  I tried the 24 and a MAF meter calibrated for them.  I found the 19's give a better idle and have felt no loss in top end power with the smaller  injectors.  I'm gonna try the 24's again eventually with a different MAF (I'm never buying ANYTHING from the company I bought that one from EVER AGAIN)

They say this kit will make approximately 360 HP /370 TQ  at the flywheel.  That works out to about 300/310 at the tires.....
