Should i go for it

My friend has a early 90's mercury cougar that he wants to get rid of. It has tranny problems. The car itself was given to him by our highschool shop teacher, it was a shop car, but it wasn't abused badly (few dings and dents from grade nines).

I was just wondering if parts from mustangs and cougars are interchangeable. If so, cougar ftw.

Also, i could probably grab this thing for like 200 bucks, then get a tranny and possible engine for about 500, rebuild the engine, and have a kickass car going.

Heh, might as well introduce myself as well, im 17, live in southern ontairo, member of anti-rice.com and thats about it. (not spamming, but i have met other members on other forums before).

i was also thinking of swapping a 2.3L turbo into it, will it fit? is the cougar a fox body? if so, engine mounts in the same place as a stang?

89 up are not fox bodies. Which engine is it? 3.8, 4.6 or 5.0? I dont see why a 2.3 turbo wouldnt fit, but a v-8 would prolly be better suited to the 3800lb kitty.

a 5.0 will fit. im sure a 2.3T would as well with alot of work. i agree...the 5.0 would be the easiest choice, depending on the year of the car.

its a 3.8. What type of tranny is it, just incase i stick witht he 3.8?
heh, maybe ill be able to find a good price on an ls1.

the deals ore out there. doing a swap like that realy dedicates yourself to the car though. sounds like you are kind of up in the air with it. for 200 bucks, if it runs and can pass inspection and all it needs is a tranny its worth it.....

you have an AOD in the car any MUstang with a v8 from 86-93 will work any cougar/tbird with a 3.8/5.0 from 85? maybe 86-93 will also work for you. in 94 they whent to the modular 4.6l and the bolt patters are differnt. im not sure though if in the 90's if the cougars got the E version of the aod i know mustangs got the E in 94 with the body change. good luck and make sure you get a aod with some kind of backing on it. to many of them are bad. i would shoot for a crown vick... oh yeah the vicks got them to. i have no idea what years. but chances are grand pa drove it

AOD-E was introduced in 1993. I know the fox mustangs never saw the E and I don't think the Cougar or T-bird did until 94 when they went modular.

Birds and Cougars didn't get the Mod motor till '96...
The '95 Thunderbird that I test drove for 3 days had a 5.0, and my friend had a '94 Cougar that he rebuilt the 5.0 in, and I think it was HO, to boot...
But don't take my word for it...

No.
'93 was the last year for the 5.0 in the Cougars/Thunderbirds.

If you're looking for a car to swap motors and have some fun with, you would be better suited with a Fox. The MN12s aren't exactly easy to work on.

im really just looking at this thing because of the availability, i figure if i can get ahold of it( he thinks he will get more then 200 in the paper) then pay like 200 for the tranny, i think the engine is still good, if not, i will swap a 5.0 into it. Gets about the same gas milage, right?

its the 4r70w thats in the 94-97 tbird/cougars.. regular AODs in prior years

i would think you could find a 91-93 tbird/cougar for less than 1k with a 5.0....may have to be patient tho

I wouldn't pay $200 for a early 90's 3.8 Cougar with a bad tranny, but that's probably just me. If I was looking for a MN12, I'd find a SC or XR7 (supercharged 3.

. Those look like fun.
