3.8 Tranny Grinding

Well, I think my 3.8 is on numbered days,  the other day i noticed that hard throttle from a stop produced a lovely grinding sound.  I then realized that shifts were kinda slow and the tranny shifted at a higher rpm.  Anyone know what this could be, and if it's easily fixed for cheap.  Or should I just run it til it did and swap in a nice 5.0 with a good tranny?

Dunno if this'll help ya, but about a week ago, the roads were slick here from a freak sleet storm, and I ran my 'Bird off in a ditch on a gravel road, and somehow knocked the little rod off the side of the tranny.
It's about 3-4 inches long and apparently controls the shift, cause mine
shifter hard and late, but no grinding noises...
This rod is different from 87 to 88, and on '88 is connected by a cable to the TB.

the modulator on the tranny could be bad...common problem...is it an automatic?

Well, after another month of grinding, tranny is now toast.  I may look into buying another car, as I'm really wanting a five speed for decent gas mileage as my 3.8 mileage is piss poor.  If not, I may look at swapping a 5-speed into this as I'm hoping it will be easy.
