New to the NASCAR Track - Camry???

Has anybody read about this?

http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/toyota/index.php

I'm no NASCAR fan by any means, but I find it amusing that one of the new race cars has a rich heritage of fuel economy and FWD.
I do understand the fact that under the skin, it will be very similar to the other cars. I just think it's odd to see the word "Camry" on a NASCAR race car.

I knew they were gonna do the truck circuit but, I was not aware of a Camry or more than one going into the car circuit.  This should prove interesting.

who cares? the cars dont even really resemble the cars that they really are. Most of them end up with the exact same engine as the next guy. Its more about the skill of the driver, not which grill with emblem the tack on there

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Just imagine, Hondas and Nissians are next. It about advertising. The popularity of Nascar with young people is growing faster than any sport. I'm a big fan but I'm losing interest as it is going to turn into an Automaker battle royal.

After each season the car commercials for the winning car will say "Buy *insert car*, it is race proven by winning the 20## Nascar NEXTEL Cup Championship." The sad part is, people listen to that . Oh yeah my Camry won the Nextel Cup last year....umm no it didn't. A RWD V8 shell did. :screwy:

Does anyone here know what NASCAR stands for? (or at least USED to stand for?)

It means National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.  Now that used to be true.  An actual requirement was that you had to be able to buy the same car at the dealership that you saw out on the track come race day.  (ie. Dodge Charger Daytona)

Not so today.  Now the thing is so regulated to keep anyone from having a mechanical advantage over anyone else.  That takes all of the fun out of it, IMO.

2/3rds of the Nascar models have FWD counterparts.  2/3rds are 4-door Sedans.  All are moving billboards and practically indistinguishable while in motion. I agree with Haystack, who cares if you throw one more into the mix. It's sad, seems like people will never get over the Import vs. Domestic issue.

Nascar is not entertaining to me... the only time it perked my interest is with that Driver X show. =/

What nascar needs is a whole lot less rules, even saftey ones.  Then I'd watch it.

Now I feel like the cat entering the bulldog pit. I am a Nascar fan.

Obviously racing has changed drastically over the years. I'll be the first to tell you that watching it on tv is flat out boring but so is just about every other sport. I really enjoy going to a track and watching a race as there is nothing else like it. Between the noise and all the people around you the environment is intense and electrifying. There is so much going on that tv misses its incredible. The crashes are spectacular and tv does them no justice.

I really don't care that all the cars look alike. Nascar struck an interest in me since I can remember and it has always stuck. I was so in to it that I met nearly every driver that raced in the early/mid 90's. I was interested in baseball for a short time too but I found most players ignorant where as the Nascar drivers were always welcoming.

Now back on the subject at hand. Toyota is in and I think that's pretty cool. Nothing wrong with it in my book especially since a manufacturer's plate means nothing to me.
