Door freezing open...

OK I know this is the lounge and its not a tbird/cougar but its automotvie and frankly there isn't an active Windstar Fan Messege Board.

For some reson on the odd occasion that its really cold out my doors will freeze open. Simply I can open then but when I go to close it, it wont latch. It's so far happened 3 times on the coldest of occasions and it's a pain to have to drive holding the door from swinging open. (those doors aint all that light )

I've tried lock de-icer in the lock and on the latch no avail after about 30 mins driving with heat on full blast and som luck it finally closes. I live in a apartment, so no garage and no extension cord that long to meltwork a hairdryer. My inverter and my mother in laws booster box dont have the power to push a hair dryer.  Anyone got any kind of a solution for my poor arm muscles? * help *

I've had this problem before, but for the life of me I cannot remember the solution.  I know it has something to do with the door latch mechanism inside the door.  Maybe some good penetrating oil to thin out the grease on the door latch and displace any moisture that may be freezing the latch....

My Cougar actually did this.  I didn't think of it being an effect of the cold at the time and replaced the passenger latch assembly.  Good as new and never had the problem again.

There probably is a lot of gook in the latch that is a lot thicker in the cold causing your problem.  Use a penetrant like WD or liquid wrench.....None of the silicone based stuff as it will only get thick in the cold as well (I made that mistake. Save yourself the hassle.)  Chances are if it's the original it is worn down somewhat as well too, so even if the penetrating oil works keep the old part in mind and spray it on a regular basis.
