German Cougar owner needs some help

Hi,

I'am a classic car guy from Germany and have a new daily driver. A 1989 Cougar LS that has been sitting in a barn for nearly two years. After changing the battery and cleaning the car, it turned out to be a good driver, so I decided to keep it for daily transportation.

But I have some problems with the car and hope to get some info in your board. I did some research here, but i did not find info about this problems.

The turning lamps do not work. In addition to this, the brake lights do not work, too. I checked the fuses and brake switch and everything is fine, but I can't find the problem.

Another issue is an annoying noise when the lights are turned of. It is like a buzzer and in some way it is connected to the parking brake, but I have no clue, what that sound means and how I can get rid of it.

Can you help a german guy to keep a Cougar alive?

btw: We don't have many of those cars over here and getting shop manuals is not possible. So lease excuse my questions, if they sound to silly for you...

Assuming you've checked the bulbs too...sounds like it could be the multifunction (turn signal) switch. Don't imagine you'll find one easily in Germany though. ;) Not sure about the buzzing noise.

Guten tag,... Well, after taking German for four years that's about all I learned. Welcome aboard.

I think I know what you are talking about with the buzzer sound. My car does that as well and it seems to be linked with the brakes. When I put new brakes on it, it went away but eventually came back. I have no idea what it is though.

The multifunction switch? Where in the car is that switch? Maybe I can check it myself. We have a second car in the barn. Same year, but 200.000 miles on it.

Btw: Is someone here, who knows about the turn signals of a 70s Cougar / T-bird. I had some problems here making them work with the old electric box. Is there any way to get a new box and make the turning lams work right again? We have a '69 T-Bird and a '70 Cougar convertible.

Hi,
I have a full set of drawings and manuals for an 87 Tbird here in Norway. I think the electrical stuuf will be the same.
It's way to much to copy or fax but I'll help with whatever I can.

When you turn (lift up or push down the handle) do they come on and not blink or are they dark?
By the way this is the multifunction switch its behind the steeringwheel on the column.
A quick check would be to test the Hazard warning lights and see what works, it uses the same wires around the car.
And swap the binker relay to see what happens then, an electronic type relay will blink even if your missing some of the lamps.
BobNorway;)
There are only two tools you will ever need:
1) WD40
2) Duct Tape
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Multi function switch is the lever assembly that also operates the wipers. The brake lights are fed through the sw. Does the high mount(center) brake lamp operate?? It does not go through the multifunction sw...
