They have been banned in Maryland for so long I had forgotten about them.

What, studded tires are banned in Hawaii?

heh...I'm surprised Minnesota doesn't allow the use of studded tires. You'd think a place that had snow 11 months out of the year would

And why the frick does arizona allow the use of studded tires until may 1st? It's probably 100 degrees in the afternoon there by may!

Here they used to be mandatory. However, modern snow tires (for car / truck / ATV / Semi) are worlds better than 20 years ago, decreasing the need for studs / chains.

Here's how it reads for NY:

It shall be unlawful to operate a motor vehicle or trailer equipped with tires having metal objects protruding from the tire tread upon any public highway. The prohibition contained in this section shall not apply to pneumatic tires containing metal type studs, the diameter of which studs inclusive of the stud casing does not exceed three-eighths of an inch and which do not protrude beyond the tread surface of such tires more than three thirty-seconds of an inch and the contact area of which does not exceed three-fourths of one per cent of the total nominal contact area of said tires determined by multiplying the circumference of the outer most edge of tread times the tread width, except that no vehicle equipped with such tires, other than school buses and state or munilly-owned vehicles, may operate on a public highway during the period from the first day of May to the fifteenth day of October, inclusive.

Being born and raised in Alabama, I have very little experience with the substances known as "snow" or "ice" on the roads.

I notice AL allows rubber studded tires on the roads. Are rubber studs any good?

I don't think studs really help that much anyway...they only do any good on ice, and I honestly don't think a few tiny metal studs in your tires are really gonna make a difference if it's icy.

Yeah quite true, but your car sure sounds cool humming along down the dry highway at 65 MPH.:rolleyes: (I used to live in Pensylvania)

I read here that if the vehicle is registered in Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett or Washington counties, they are allowed between November 1st and March 31st. I guess that doesn't really help you out though.

hey theres only snow here 10 and a half months its just really cold the rest of the summer

im sure the reason the prohibit studs is so that the state owned tow trucks can make more money here
if you ever what to fear for your life you should drive on the freeways near the twin cities after a snow storm dang city folks and our foreign friends think that cars going 70 mph should stop on a dime in the snow ahhh goood times

Yeah, I was following a guy in a Geo Metro awhile back who was running studs on the front on his car, and taking turns way faster than a geo metro should. It was throwing sparks from the tires.

Trust me people do that here too...there were many times when I was going home from work at 10 pm and the road was covered with so much snow I couldn't even see it, and I was doing about 35...and people in trucks and SUV's go flying around me doing at least 55.

Anyway the only reason I can think of for banning studs is that they tear up the roads. But salting the out of them tears em up worse, so...I dunno.

Live and learn. I have a step-daughter that lives in Westminster. I can transfer the titles of my cars to her and get my studs.
Well maybe not, since I am retired I always have the option to not drive.
